Hamble Lifeboat

Hamble Lifeboat Independent Lifeboat Service ‘Saving Lives Since 1968’, volunteer accredited for search and rescue.

Hamble Lifeboat was formed in 1968, as the Southampton Water Inshore Rescue Service (Hamble Rescue), by local residents in response to the increasing number of casualties occurring in Southampton Water and the Rivers Hamble, Itchen and Test (19 deaths in one year).

On National Coastwatch Day, we'd like to recognise and thank the volunteers of the National Coastwatch Institution and in particular NCI - Calshot Tower & Stone Point

Whatever the weather, NCI teams give up their time to watch over our coastline, providing a valuable service to mariners, watersports enthusiasts, and the emergency services.

We know how much dedication goes into keeping watch and helping to make our waters safer for everyone. Thank you to all NCI volunteers for the important work you do, today and throughout the year.

From everyone at Hamble Lifeboat, thank you for your continued support and service.

While conducting a training exercise off Calshot this afternoon, Hamble Lifeboat spotted a capsized sailing dinghy in challenging conditions, with winds exceeding 30 knots and gusts over 40 knots.

The sailor was recovered safely and found to be uninjured, although understandably fatigued after repeated attempts to recover the vessel. With assistance from Red Osprey, which created a lee to improve conditions on scene, the crew were able to right the dinghy and recover it along with its rig.

The sailor and dinghy were returned safely to Calshot, where members of Calshot Sailing Club assisted with the recovery ashore.

A great example of teamwork on the water, with thanks to Red Osprey, Southampton VTS and Calshot Sailing Club for their assistance.

This Volunteers’ Week, Hamble Lifeboat would like to say a huge thank you to every one of our volunteers.

From our operational crew to our shore team, fundraisers, engineers, trustees, event supporters, trainers, administrators, families, and everyone who gives their time behind the scenes, Hamble Lifeboat exists because people choose to step forward and serve their community.

Already in 2026, our volunteers have continued to show what makes this charity so special. From keeping our lifeboats operational, supporting fundraising activity, developing our future capability, representing the charity in the community, training hard, and being ready to respond when called upon, their commitment has been outstanding.

Volunteering for an independent lifeboat charity takes time, skill, resilience, teamwork, and dedication. It also relies on the support of families, friends, employers, and the wider community who help make that service possible.

Since 1968, Hamble Lifeboat has been powered by volunteers. That remains just as true today.

To everyone who gives their time to Hamble Lifeboat: thank you. Your contribution matters, and it is deeply appreciated.

A huge thank you to the Chaos Crew Jet Ski Rideout Club for their incredible support of Hamble Lifeboat. During their Round the Island Jet Ski Rideout in May, this fantastic group of jet ski enthusiasts raised an impressive £1,009.23 for the lifeboat. We are extremely grateful for their generosity and the effort that went into organising the event.

Chaos Crew is a fun loving and ever growing community of like minded riders whose aim is to bring jet ski enthusiasts together from across the country, enjoying rides in as many locations as possible. Just as importantly, they are passionate advocates for safe and responsible riding. The group actively works with harbour authorities, harbour masters and, in some areas, local police to help promote good practice on the water and encourage riders to respect other water users.

At a time when irresponsible riding can sometimes attract negative attention, it is great to see a group leading by example and helping to promote a positive image of the jet ski community. Thank you once again to everyone involved in Chaos Crew for your support, fundraising efforts and commitment to making our waters safer for everyone. We look forward to seeing you on the water again soon!

Yesterday was a very special day for both Southampton & Hamble Lifeboat Crews as we were invited to the 804th Mayor Making ceremony at the O2 Guildhall in Southampton.

This formal ceremony is steeped in civic history and provided a wonderful insight into the proud city of Southampton, it’s people, it’s values and it’s wonderful volunteers.

We were honoured that the new Lady Lord Mayor Pat Evemy passed on the excellent news that our new Southampton Lifeboat was to be one of her three chosen charities for 2026/7, a wonderful endorsement of the work of our lifesaving volunteers.

A special day in a special place, with some truly special people.
