A little bit of background. We were at the Southwick Revival this weekend about a mile outside of the village in a forested area called Place Woods. This is where the 21st Army Group and Monty himself were camped just a few days before D-Day. To recreate this , visitors were encouraged to sign on for the Army for the duration. Bus loads of these new recruits were dropped onto us every 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day. Each platoon was given the basic of some footdrill by either CSM Grist or Cpl Tolson before moving up the track to visit the Grenadier Guards and some French teachers. Come wind and rain, this was our weekend, non-stop. My huge thanks to Jack, Herbie and Scott for their support and putting up with the atrocious weather.

We are in Place Woods outside of Southwick, Hampshire this weekend. This is where the 21st Army Group were encamped before D-Day. A very moist day but lots of visitors. Hopefully it will be dryer tomorrow.

A gentle start to the season with a visit to the REME museum at Lyneham in Wiltshire. We were displaying our SAS equipment this weeked which was great for the warm weather on Saturday but we had chilly knees on Sunday when the temperatures dropped. Brrrr. Still, a great weekend. Thanks to Colin, Kath, Herbie and Jack for the support.

Coming to a show near you soon. Thanks Tony, good work.

Hello all. It is that time of year when it is prudent to do a quick round-up of 2025 before the chaos of next year starts. Between us, we managed to attend 22 shows, many of them new to us, and the most we have ever done in one season. It felt like we did more SAS than CMP this year but I think that is because we attended TankFest and Tiger day at Bovington and the Classic Car Show at the NEC, all with the MVT and Colin's SAS raiding Jeep. The old favourites like Overlord and Bletchley (twice) were fantastic as always along with the White Horse Show which continues to improve. Southwick was a first for us as a unit, but hidden in Place Woods, not many visitors saw us. We also made our first visit to IWM Duxford for one of their themed weekends and got some great images alongside some lovely aircraft. Shuttleworth was much the same, another first and a nice air display. It has been wonderful catching up with old chums and making new friends too. The year 2026 will be a little less intense I think, but having said that, there may be visits to Normandy or even North Africa but they are still in the planning/wishing/saving stage. The diminutive Excelsior motorbike has been a great success if just a little temperamental. My huge thanks to Scott for his help on that and the gearbox rebuild on my Willis. My immense thanks to Colin, Kath, Catherine, Jack, Herbie, Scott, Tony and Andy for giving up their valuable time at various events. We may possibly have 2 new recruits for next season but again, early days on that. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all health, peace and happiness for 2026 and I hope I see you at a show in the Summer. Best wishes, Pete.

Dear WWII Re-enactor or Enthusiast,

I’m forwarding you some information about a WWII monument that we would like to site at the location of a Bailey Bridge built in September 1944 in Son en Breugel as part of Operation Market Garden. I’m a resident of Son and am helping Arie Donck (see below) achieve this. However we are facing some planning permission issues related to the location and have set up a petition to address this. Can you please read the information below and sign the petition? Please also share this with any friends or members of your group. We need as many individual signatures as possible.

Please help us!

Towards the end of World War II, as part of Operation Market Garden, the US 101st Airborne Division, the US 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and the British Royal Engineers of ### Corps (30 Corps) liberated the village of Son en Breugel in the Netherlands. This involved building a Bailey Bridge over the Wilhelmina canal during the night of 18th/19th September 1944.

To honour and remember these very brave men, a monument has been created, that is constructed using parts of an original Bailey Bridge. Unfortunately, the local council will not give permission to place this monument on the banks of the canal at the location of the bridge, but prefer a location a kilometre further into the village, near a pond, which in 1944 was a sandy pit that served as a POW assembly point.

Every year dozens of buses carrying the remaining Operation Market Garden veterans, their families, and other interested parties come from all over the World to visit the site of the Bailey Bridge. Disappointingly, at the moment there is nothing to commemorate this important event.

We feel very strongly that the monument should be in the historically correct place and so have launched a citizens’ initiative to petition the local council to change their decision on the location.

We need as many people as possible to support this petition, not only the residents of Son en Breugel but also anyone from a national or international background. So please add your signature.

You can sign the petition (available in English) by scanning the QR code or using the following link: https://monumentbaileybrug.petities.nl

Thank you very much.

The liberation of Son en Breugel is celebrated every year around the 17th September with a large re-enactment taking place on the Oranjeveld in Son. If you are ever passing please call in – you’d be very welcome.

Yesterday I took the Excelsior out for it's first road run to Shirley High Street in Southampton to collect for the Poppy Appeal dressed as Airborne Provost, and today I was out in the Jeep at Aldi Chandlers Ford near Eastleigh in my SAS kit. Lots of poppies sold and lots of cash donated. Our last event of the year is the Classic car show at the NEC Birmingham next weekend portraying L Detachment 1st SAS Brigade. It will make a nice change to be indoors.
