Being a parent or carer will not come easily to everyone. It is common to feel overwhelmed, feel a dip in confidence, and struggle with new responsibilities. You may also have challenging feelings about yourself, your partner or even your child.

There are things that can sometimes make this feel harder such as your own emotional wellbeing or feeling isolated. If you are struggling with your relationship with your baby, whether that is during your pregnancy or after, if you are not feeling confident in getting to know your baby, please reach out to your local health visiting team.

We are here to listen and support you to access the right support for you and your family.

Today marks the beginning of Infant Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 and this year’s theme is ‘Attunement’.

Attunement is how you as a parent notices, understands and responds to your baby’s feelings and needs.

Over time this helps babies to feel safe, understood and connected, and helps them learn to regulate their emotions, supporting good infant mental health.
