đź“° Update on Local Government Reorganisation in Derbyshire

The Government’s announcement that it will review the Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) programme means that LGR in Derbyshire is now paused.

While the review takes place, councils have been asked to pause work to implement the LGR decisions announced in July. The borough council elections in Amber Valley scheduled for May 2027, which had previously been postponed as part of the reorganisation, will now go ahead on existing boundaries.

We don’t yet know what the review will involve, how long it will take or what it will mean for the decision made for Derbyshire in July. We’ll share further information as soon as we receive more details from Government.

In the meantime, yesterday’s announcement doesn't affect your local services, which will continue as normal.

The Government has today announced its decision on Local Government Reorganisation in Derbyshire.

The decision that has been made is to proceed with option B1, a north / south split of the county, with Amber Valley being split between two new Unitary Councils.

From April 2028, these new councils will comprise of the current areas of:

📍 North: Bolsover District Council, Chesterfield Borough Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council, High Peak Borough Council and North-East Derbyshire District Council plus 21 parishes* from Amber Valley Borough Council.

📍 South: Derby City Council, Erewash Borough Council and South Derbyshire District Council plus 14 parishes** from Amber Valley Borough Council.

*Parishes in the North: Aldercar and Langley Mill, Alderwasley, Alfreton, Ashleyhay, Codnor, Crich, Dethick, Lea and Holloway, Hazelwood, Heanor and Loscoe, Idridgehay and Alton, Ironville, Pentrich, Ravensdale Park, Ripley, Shottle and Postern, Somercotes, South Wingfield, Swanwick, Turnditch, Weston Underwood, Windley.

**Parishes in the South: Belper, Denby, Duffield, Holbrook, Horsley, Horsley Woodhouse, Kedleston, Kilburn, Kirk Langley, Mackworth, Mapperley, Quarndon, Shipley, Smalley.

There are no immediate changes to council services, and residents should continue to access services in the usual way.

The Leader of Amber Valley Borough Council, Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams, said:

"We're disappointed that Government has chosen a proposal which would split Amber Valley between two new unitary authorities. This wasn't Amber Valley Borough Council's preferred option, and proposals to split the borough received the lowest level of support through our public consultation in June 2025.

"This represents a significant change for our residents, communities and colleagues. We will now take the time to fully understand the implications of today's decision and will continue to keep people informed as more information becomes available.

"Throughout this process, our focus remains on delivering the high-quality services our residents rely on every day."

What happens next?

Today's announcement marks the beginning of the next stage of the Local Government Reorganisation programme.

This stage provides an opportunity to shape future local government arrangements that will continue to deliver high-quality, sustainable services for the people and communities we serve.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to participate in the Local Government Reorganisation consultations and share their views throughout the process.
