Last night, we were privileged to welcome a former cadet back to our unit 👏

Lt Col Christopher Armstrong RM, once a Royal Marines Cadet at South Shields Unit and now the Commanding Officer of 30 Commando unit….

(An interesting fact shared from Chris: the original 30 commando was hand picked by Ian Fleming - the creator of James Bond! 🤵‍♂️)

….visited his home in South Shields to speak to our cadets about what he has been doing over the past few months and years, and how the organisation supported his journey into the Royal Marines 🇬🇧⚓️

Chris, who was a cadet in the early 2000s, has served in the Royal Marines Commandos for over 20 years. During that time, he has seen and experienced so much, and he was keen to share those experiences with our cadets, including some recent activities where he and his team have spent time doing cold water training, amongst other things!

He offered some great knowledge and insight, and shared the three most important things he believes our young people should focus on:

1. Work hard at school 📚
2. Work hard at Sea Cadets ⚓️
3. Believe in yourself 💯

🌸A SPECIAL SUNDAY FOR MOTHERS & CAREGIVERS - YELLOW 8.6🌸

This week our Junior Sea Cadets have been getting creative by making origami flowers to take home for the adults in their lives, ready to celebrate 'Mothering Sunday'. 💐

Each flower was made with care and pride. We hope these small handmade gifts bring a smile to the faces of those who support our cadets every day.

🎉 WINNIE TURNS 103 🎉

Today we joined friends, staff from Cheviot Court Care Home and other organisations to visit Winnie, a WW2 veteran who served in the Woman’s Royal Navy Service (WRNS) during the Second World War. 🇬🇧

We took along some of our cadets who wanted to wish her well, armed with cards and flowers to commemorate the special occasion. It was a wonderful afternoon attended by many, including the Mayor and other veterans and armed forces representatives, to celebrate a lovely lady and her milestone birthday. 🎈

📣 HIGH SHERIFF OF TYNE AND WEAR AWARD 2026 📣

Last night our Officer in Charge, 1st Lieutenant and Cadet Corporal attended the High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear Awards Ceremony 2026, alongside the Lord Lieutenant, other youth organisations and VIPs, where we were incredibly proud to receive an award recognising our valuable service to the community. 🏆✨

It was a fantastic evening meeting and networking with other organisations and community members who are all doing amazing work across the region 🤝

Alongside this award, we were also generously granted £1,000 towards our upcoming Easter Camp 🏕️ This funding will support our ongoing fundraising and help ensure that young people in our unit who might not otherwise have the opportunity can take part in the trip.

Thanks to this support, we are able to make places on the camp almost free of charge for all of our cadets, giving them an experience they will never forget 🌟

A huge thank you to the High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear for their generous support and for recognising the work of our unit — we are extremely grateful!

We’re currently recruiting Adult Volunteer Instructors (18+) to join our team at South Shields Sea Cadets.

No experience is necessary (although it’s always helpful!) – full support and training will be provided. We’re looking for volunteers to help support both our Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets sections. It’s a fantastic opportunity to build new skills, meet great people, and make a real difference to young lives.

🕖 Parade Nights: Monday & Friday | 1900–2130

📍 Location: Wapping Street, South Shields, NE33 1LQ

At the same time, we’re also welcoming new cadets aged 9–17 across our three sections:

🟠 Juniors (9–11 years) – Friday Group only

🎉 Best of luck to our 2026 Drill Team! 🎉

Today Tyne South and Northumberland District Sea Cadets host their District Drill Competition at Fenham Barracks, Newcastle.

Well done to our team for your determination and dedication this year, remember to have fun! That’s what it’s all about… getting it perfect, or even close to perfect is great, but enjoying the experience makes it so much more rewarding at the end!
