Thames Water is in its death throes.

It has around £18.5 billion of debt, has just drawn down another £677 million in emergency funding, and yet senior management bonuses have risen from £2.8 million to £4.1 million.

Watch how those at the top behave as it unravels: more debt, more rewards, more risk dumped on the public.

This is what a failed privatised monopoly looks like. I suspect the others will go down in similarly undignified fashion before the whole rotten system inevitably ends up back in public hands.

Out and about in West Park today delivering our latest Green News and chatting with residents.

It includes updates on what your Green councillors have been working on, useful contact details for reporting local issues, and information on how to get involved if you’d like to help locally.

I’ll be around the ward for a while, so if you see me, stop and say hello. Always happy to have a chat and hear what’s on your mind.

Harton deserves a councillor who will work hard, be visible and put residents first. That’s exactly why I’m backing Kathryn Kaupa in the Harton by-election.

I’ve got to know Kathryn over the last few months and I know how passionate she is about serving her community. She’ll listen, she’ll turn up, and she’ll get stuck in.

While other parties are distracted by internal rows and national drama, we’re focused on the things that actually matter locally: cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods, protecting green spaces and standing up for residents.

If you live in Harton, please consider lending Kathryn your vote on Thursday 6 August. Every vote really does matter in a by-election.

And if you’re already thinking of voting Green, why not take the next step and get involved?

We don’t have billionaire donors or wealthy backers. We rely on ordinary people giving a little of their time. Delivering leaflets, knocking on doors, helping at events or simply chatting to neighbours genuinely wins elections.

If you’d like to help elect more hardworking Green councillors in South Tyneside, send me a message. Even an hour here and there can make a real difference.

🌻 Please vote Kathryn Kaupa on Thursday 6 August.

Good to see the issue of illegal bikes, disorder and ASB in West Park being covered in the Shields Gazette.

Residents are right to be concerned. The behaviour we’ve seen around the park, the pump track and surrounding streets is not acceptable, and people should not feel unsafe using public spaces.

It’s also worth being clear on reporting routes.

ASB can include things like nuisance behaviour, repeated disturbance, littering, intimidation, groups causing concern, or behaviour that makes people feel unsafe.

Crime is different. If someone is being threatened, assaulted, bikes are being ridden dangerously, property is being damaged, or there is an immediate risk to people, that needs reporting to the police.

I’ve been speaking with council officers and Public Protection about this, and work is continuing with Northumbria Police to tackle the problem. Operation Capio, Project Shield, Business and Community Responders and youth outreach work are all part of that wider response.

Residents also need clear ways to report what they are seeing. Reports help build the evidence needed for enforcement, patrols and action.

Report ASB here:
www.southtyneside.gov.uk/reportit

For non-emergency police matters, call 101 or report online to Northumbria Police.

For emergencies, or if a crime is happening now, always call 999.

This is not just a West Park issue, and it is not something that will be fixed overnight, but I’ll keep pushing for action and making sure residents’ concerns are heard.

This is where this kind of nationalism leads.

It is not patriotism to shout abuse at people in the street. It is not patriotism to intimidate people who disagree with you. And it is not patriotism to let wealthy political figures stir up anger in working-class communities for their own ends.

Real patriotism is wanting better for your town and your country. It is refusing to be played against your neighbours. It is standing up for decent values, not just wrapping yourself in a flag.

People in South Tyneside deserve politics that brings communities together, not politics that uses frustration and hardship to divide people.

Whatever your views, intimidation and abuse have no place here.

🇬🇧 Calling all South Tyneside veterans!

I’m really pleased to see South Tyneside Council hosting another Veterans’ Breakfast at the Town Hall.

As a veteran myself, I know how valuable these events can be. They’re a chance to catch up with old friends, meet fellow veterans, share experiences, or simply enjoy a good breakfast in great company.

📅 Saturday 18 July 2026
🕘 9:30am – 11:00am
📍 South Shields Town Hall

I’ll be there, and I’m hoping to see plenty of the Sea Company crew too. If you spot us having a friendly chat with the Mayor about finding a few quid to get more veterans out surfing, you’ll know exactly what we’re up to! 😂🏄‍♂️

Please note: Places need to be booked in advance.

To reserve your place, contact the Civic Office on 0191 424 7331 or 0191 424 7314, or email [email protected].

If you’re a veteran living in South Tyneside, I’d encourage you to come along. It would be great to see a strong turnout.

🚸 Safer crossings proposed for Temple Park Road & Harton Lane – have your say! 🚸

We’re really pleased to see progress on long-awaited road safety improvements in the West Park ward, following years of concerns from residents about speeding traffic and dangerous parking.

Plans include:
✅ 3 new zebra crossings
✅ 1 toucan crossing
✅ Safer routes for children and families travelling to nearby schools

This is a fully funded scheme through the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority – meaning no cost to South Tyneside Council – and it builds on ongoing work to make our neighbourhoods safer for everyone.

We’ve been supporting these improvements and it’s great to see them moving forward, alongside the efforts of local residents and former councillor Nicky Gynn who campaigned on this issue.

📢 Now is your chance to have your say

The public consultation is open until 13th July 2026 – we’d strongly encourage residents to share their views:

Improving road safety, especially around schools, makes a real difference to our community – so please take a few minutes to get involved.

I was contacted by a couple in West Park who love the park but have struggled to access it. One of them is a wheelchair user, and unfortunately, their chair was damaged when navigating broken paths. They reached out hoping for a solution so they can enjoy the park again safely.

While Highways doesn’t have a budget specifically for this, I didn’t want to leave it at that. I spoke with Merrick, who helps manage community development funding, and we’ve found a way to make this happen.

We met the couple today to see the problem areas in person. It’s eye-opening when you see what’s inaccessible day-to-day if you rely on a wheelchair. We’re going to work on a solution to fix these paths and make the park accessible again. I’ll keep you updated as we get it sorted.

Really pleased that Kathryn Kaupa is standing for the Green Party in the Harton ward by-election on Thursday 6 August.

This by-election has come about because the Reform councillor elected last month has already resigned, just one month into a four-year term.

Harton residents now have another chance to choose who represents them.

Kathryn would be a hardworking, thoughtful and community-minded councillor who will listen, do the work, and stand up for local people.

If you’re in Harton, please give Kathryn and the Greens your support on Thursday 6 August.
