Weston’s Marine Lake is set to re-open this Friday (22 May) at 3pm, ready to be enjoyed by residents and visitors this summer 🎉 🌊
The tidal lake, which is usually open all year round, has been closed since October 2025. During this time, extensive improvement work has been carried out as part of our ambitious placemaking vision for Weston.
Our contractor, Weston-based EJ McGrath Construction Ltd, has completed the work. We’re now working hard to get everything ready to open later this week in time for the start of the bank holiday weekend and school holidays.
Improvements include:
✅ A new light-coloured concrete detail and new signs around the edge of the lake on the lower apron to improve safety.
✅ Repaired and resurfaced lower walkway around the lake. The grey colour is already settling and fading since it was first laid, as planned.
✅ Improved signage around the lake including a new welcome sign at the entrance to increase visibility. This is especially useful to encourage visitors walking along the prom to visit the lake.
✅ Improved access – steps and ramps repaired, resurfaced or rebuilt, and handrails upgraded.
✅ Seven more cycle racks (nine cycle racks in total) in two locations on the upper walkway near steps down to the lake. This is enough for up to 18 bikes.
✅ The Madeira Gardens pavilion roof has been repaired.
✅ New self-contained public toilet cubicles with direct entry from the promenade. This is in the space to the right of the Cove building that was previously used as women’s public toilets. The number of public toilets in use has increased, including one accessible toilet.
✅ A new concession, equipment hire and storage facility has been created which will be occupied by Snappy SUP’s for stand-up paddleboarding hire and lessons. Under-used space to the left of the Cove building that was previously used as men’s public toilets has been remodelled to better utilise the area and bring a new added facility to the lake.
You’ll also be able to have refreshments and enjoy the health benefits of a woodfired sauna session on the plaza thanks to Neads A Coffee Hut and You Can Sauna 🙌
While the lake has been closed, the Weston-super-Mare Marine Lake Mudlarks led on work to create a new deep water swimming channel across the width of the lake. This was made possible thanks to the social value commitment within our contact with EJ McGrath.
A big thank you for being so patient while we've carried out the work 🙏
