Local residents are angry, and rightly so.

This significant waste collection failure that has affected approximately 3,000 households in South Gloucestershire. This simply isn't good enough.

Also, residents have been left without nappy and hygiene waste collections, and communication has been poor, reporting issues is difficult and getting through by phone is nearly impossible.

The South Gloucestershire Conservative Group is calling on the Lib Dem/Labour administration to urgently:

• Provide a clear timeline for catching up missed collections
• Explain why measures were not sufficient to prevent disruption
• Set out what steps will be taken to ensure the fleet is robust against future extreme weather events
• Improve communication with residents during service failures

Recycling and waste service disruption: Wednesday 27 May 2026.

Collections will finish at 1pm today due to the extreme heat.

♻️ Recycling: if your recycling has not been collected by 1pm today, we will collect it next week on your normal collection day.

🗑️ Back bin: if your black bin has not been emptied, leave it out and we will empty it tomorrow.

🚗 Sort It recycling centres: recycling centres will close at 2pm today. Bookings after this time have been cancelled.

We apologise for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

A statement from Cllr Liz Brennan, Leader of the South Gloucestershire Conservative Group:

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Cllr Tony Griffiths over the weekend. Tony was a dear friend, colleague, and teammate and truly one in a million.

Tony gave his all to everything he did, particularly in his dedicated service to the community as a town councillor in Bradley Stoke. He cared deeply about people — his family, his friends, and the residents he worked tirelessly to support.

Throughout my own time in politics, Tony was always encouraging, supportive, and someone who unfailingly had my back. Politics can be difficult and challenging at times, but Tony always reminded us why public service matters and the difference that kindness, compassion, and commitment can make.

He will be remembered for his positivity, humour, warmth, and unwavering dedication to others. Tony was truly a force of nature and his loss will be felt deeply across our Conservative family and the wider community.

On behalf of South Gloucestershire Conservatives, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Tony’s family, friends, and loved ones at this very difficult time.

Repeal the 1957 Planning Consent!

Following the challenges faced by residents in Pilning, we are calling for the 1957 Consent to be repealed.

At the latest Full Council meeting, we supported the Motion to call upon the Leader of South Gloucestershire Council alongside other group leaders to write a joint letter to the UK Government, asking to repeal the outdated 1957 Planning consent.

Conservative Group Leader, Cllr Liz Brennan said: "As Conservatives, we believe in responsible development, development that supports economic growth, but also respects and invests in the communities it serves. That balance is clearly not being achieved under the current framework. We therefore agree with the central argument of this motion: that the 1957 planning consent mechanism is no longer fit for purpose and must be addressed".

Lets get South Gloucestershire Moving🚌

South Gloucestershire Conservatives are asking local residents to take part in our quick survey on how we can improve transport across our communities.

We know many residents are frustrated by the current state of our roads. Potholes continue to damage vehicles, congestion is worsening in many areas and too many roads feel unsafe for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Local people deserve better.

We are calling for:

👉Potholes to be properly fixed and improve road maintenance
👉Make our roads safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
👉Reduce congestion and improve traffic flow
👉Invest in local infrastructure that supports our growing communities
👉Improve public transport connections and reliability
👉Ensure residents’ views are listened to when transport decisions are made

Your feedback will help shape our local priorities and strengthen our campaign for better roads and transport across South Gloucestershire.

South Gloucestershire Council Local Plan Hearings begin this week:

Our local Conservative Councillors will be attending a number of the hearings in the coming weeks and months to ensure residents' views are heard.

We continue to strongly oppose the plans by the Lib Dem-Labour coalition to build over our Green belt and share residents' views around the lack of local infrastructure to support these plans.

Hearings to keep an eye on👇

- The Green belt, Wednesday 20th May
- Strategic Urban Extensions, Thursday 16th June
- North and East Fringe, 30th June - 2nd July

Let us know your thoughts by emailing - [email protected]

Success! Well done Cllr Liz Brennan for Frenchay & Downend

🚸 Delighted to share that work is starting today on the new zebra crossing on Four Acre Road.

This will make crossing to school and the local shops much safer and easier for residents, families, and children.

This was something we campaigned for back in 2023, and after plenty nudging and persistence, I’m really pleased to see it finally getting underway.

Green bin charges have gone up and residents have been ignored

Conservatives and local residents repeatedly expressed strong feelings about bin cuts and rising charges , but the Labour / Lib Dem administration has simply not listened.

In 2023, green bin charges were £30 under Conservative leadership

Here’s what residents are now facing:
🟢 2024: £60 – doubled under Labour / Lib Dem control
🟢 2026: £75 – another increase planned

That’s a 150% rise in just a few years, hitting households already struggling with the cost of living.

Lib Dem–Labour Council Backtrack Shows Parking Charges Are Hurting High Street Businesses🅿

The decision by the Liberal Democrat–Labour administration to introduce 30 minutes of free parking is clear evidence they are backtracking after mounting pressure from residents and businesses.

South Gloucestershire Conservative Group Leader, Cllr Liz Brennan said:

“This is a clear backtrack. It shows the Liberal Democrats and Labour know their parking charges are having a devastating impact on local businesses and our town centres.”
