New Life-Saving equipment

Somerton Fire Station has been working closely with Somerton Police Station, South Somerset Neighbourhood Policing and Avon and Somerset Bleed Kit Partnership over the last few months and we are incredibly proud to support our community further by announcing that we have installed a bleed kit on the front of our station. This is one of two kits currently available in Somerton, with the other located outside the police station.

These kit are accessible 24/7 and can be used by anyone in an emergency to help control catastrophic bleeding. Simply follow the instructions displayed on the front of the cabinet to gain access. If the kit is needed, you should always call 999, as the ambulance service can provide guidance on how to use the contents correctly while help is on the way.

The kit contains:
2 large heavy-duty trauma dressings
2 haemostatic dressings
1 tourniquet
2 pairs of nitrile gloves
Medical shears/scissors
A foil blanket
A CPR face shield
A whistle

It also includes a colour-coded diagram showing which dressing should be applied to different areas of the body.

The Somerton crew are extremely proud to have both a bleed kit and a defibrillator available outside our station for public use. We will be checking both units weekly to ensure they remain ready for any life-threatening emergency.

For more information about these kits and how they can be used, please follow the link in the comments.

🚨24/5/26🚨
Incident: Fire (Electrical)
Location: Curry Rivel
Crew: Dan, Tom, Max, Ian, Paul
Attending stations: Taunton

That evening, the Somerton crew were alerted to an electrical pole that had caught fire. On arrival, crews confirmed this was the case and the oil from the transformer had set both the pole and surrounding ground on fire. Crews waited for National Grid to arrive to confirm it was safe before dampening down the hot spots.

Did you know you can call the national grid (105) if you spot something wrong with their network. By calling them and giving them either an identification number or 3 words, they are able to take steps remotely to help isolate the piece of equipment that is faulty or damaged. If there is fire/smoke or risk to human life, then always call 999.

Nation grid number:

More than 8 in 10 UK drowning deaths are male.

As the weather warms up, our Chief Fire Officer Gavin Ellis - also National Fire Chiefs Council - NFCC Drowning Prevention Lead - is urging people to take care around water. Many incidents happen during everyday activities, often without entering the water intentionally.

Cold water is dangerous year-round - even a simple slip can be life-threatening.

Stay safe: keep back from edges, avoid distractions, and call 999 instead of entering the water. Full story in link below.

Incident: Large Vehicle Fire
Location: Street
Crew: 82P1 Dan, Ian, Nicky, Lod, Paul
82M5 Tom, Max, Elliot
Attending Stations: Glastonbury, Bridgwater (Water carrier)

Yesterday afternoon, the crew were alerted to a tele-handler that had caught on fire. On arrival, the crew were faced with the vehicle well alight and starting to set the nearby hedgerow and grass on fire. Somerton and Glastonbury worked together getting CAFS to work on the fire. The decision was taken to make up for the Land Rover from Somerton to assist in the effort. Once mobilized, they were soon on scene helping to extinguish the surrounding areas.
