On fly tipping…
Imagine you’re a tradesman. You’ve just finished a job and now have a truck full of rubbish that needs disposing of before you can go to the next job.
You can’t book an appointment at the council run tip until the day after tomorrow, which leaves you unable to use your truck, and it will cost you, say, £200.
Alternatively, you can drive down Gate Lane, Watery Lane or any of the other secluded roads in and around Knowle, and dump your rubbish illegally. Without appointment, without cost, and, as we’ll see, without penalty
The only thing stopping you is your social conscience and basic decency. But it’s unfair. You’re doing the right thing, at considerable cost, but others aren’t and are getting away with it.
It’s the same feeling that shoppers have when they’re queuing at the checkout watching a shoplifter waltz out, unimpeded, with a rucksack full of swag. Or even a homeowner who’s climbed the property ladder to buy their forever home in Knowle but now finds the surrounding green belt being threatened by speculative housing developments.
The subliminal message is the same; do the right thing and you’ll be shafted.
Back to fly tipping. The most recent data show that across Solihull there were over 3000 reported incidents of fly tipping. And 3 prosecutions!.
Let that sink in. Fly tipping is virtually risk free because the [Conservative] council refuse to enforce the law.
Apparently, whilst you can use motion activated cameras to track a Badger family through a wood at night our authorities can’t track and identify a truck fly tipping rubbish.
Because the will isn’t there.
And each one of those fly tipping incidents has to be cleared up by…..you’ve guessed it, the Council. At a conservative estimate of £500 per clearance and disposal the annual cost is c£1.5m. It’s no wonder Solihull Council is in financial distress.
It’s an environmental and economic disaster. And it’s getting worse.
It’s impossible to blame anyone other than the politicians who have controlled Solihull for the past 15 years.
People don’t do bad things if they think there’s a high probability that they’ll be caught and punished. And they will be if existing laws are enforced and prosecuted.
But that won’t happen under the Conservatives.
