Happy Volunteers Week 2026! ๐ŸŽ‰

Meet Kulsum, volunteer for Wards 18 and 19.

Kulsum has been volunteering for almost eight years, and can often be found making tea and chatting with patients. Having two children who are profoundly deaf, Kulsum was inspired to help others that are also hard of hearing.

โ€œThe staff are always really nice and friendly, and they really appreciate me.โ€

โ€œI like to think I have a good heart, and I want to make other people happy. I often see patients on the ward who are sad, and I like talking to them and helping them.โ€

โ€œI wanted to be a nurse when I was younger, but I wasnโ€™t able to โ€“ now I can volunteer and help people in the hospital.โ€

Thank you for your compassion and generosity, Kulsum โ™ฅ๏ธ

Happy Volunteers Week 2026! ๐ŸŽ‰

Lastly for this special week, meet Kusum who is a volunteer on Ward 20B.

Kusum has been volunteering for seven years and loves talking to people and cheering up their day.

Kusum said: "Sometimes I see patients who don't look happy. Or dementia patients who are confused and frustrated.

"I like to help them in anyway I can, even if it's just listening, or helping with drinking and eating."

Thank you Kusum for being so patient and kind, you epitomise our values. โ™ฅ๏ธ

We wanted to give a big shout out to all the volunteers and introduce you to a fewโ€ฆ

Say hi to Carol, guiding and assisting patients at the north entrance ๐Ÿ‘‹

Carol has been volunteering for nearly 15 years, and previously worked as a nurse at Selly Oak Hospital when she was eighteen. After marrying and having three children, she felt it was too late to get back into nursing at the time, and now volunteers here at Solihull.

โ€œI love the interaction and I love being useful; I need to help people. Youโ€™re helping people but youโ€™re also helping yourself.โ€

You're an inspiration Carol - thank you for all you do for our hospital.

Happy Volunteers Week 2026!

This morning, meet Dennis, who is a volunteer in outpatients reception.

Dennis has been volunteering at Solihull Hospital for 12 years, he is a local resident and retired engineer.

On his volunteering role, Dennis said:
"Volunteering gets me out of the house, keeps me fit and out of trouble!

"I'm a people person and I love meeting all the visitors, patients and staff when I'm here.

"I often get asked about my role and I encourage people to get involved in volunteering - you can make a real difference".

A huge thank you to Dennis and all of our volunteers for the amazing support you provide every day โ™ฅ๏ธ

The peace garden at Solihull Hospital has opened following generous refurbishment works carried out by Solihull Hospital Charity (University Hospitals Birmingham Charity), GM Building & Property Services, Robert Half UK and CPW mechanical and electrical engineers ๐Ÿชด ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

The opening was also a time to remember Kim Clark, Healthcare Assistant on Ward 20A, who sadly died in May.

In the coming months, a memorial bench for Kim will be installed in the garden, where her colleagues can come and remember her.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to creating this beautiful space โค๏ธ

โ€œWe are often a patientโ€™s first point of contact during what can be a very tense time. Itโ€™s our job to help them feel prepared.โ€

Jophy Joseph is a Senior Sister in the Pre-Operative Assessment Unit at Solihull Hospital.

Originally beginning her career as an A&E nurse in Dubai before moving to England in 2006, Jophy brings a wealth of international and NHS experience. She joined UHB as a post-operative nurse and quickly progressed, now leading a team focused on ensuring patients are fully prepared for surgery.

In our latest โ€˜We are UHBโ€™ blog, Jophy shares an insight into the vital role her team plays in keeping surgical pathways running smoothly. This includes reducing last-minute cancellations and supporting anxious patients through what can be a daunting process.

She also reflects on stepping into leadership, the challenges of high demand and tight turnaround times, and the importance of taking time to recharge outside of work.

In celebration of International Clinical Trials Day 2026 last week, our brilliant research and innovation colleagues at Solihull Hospital hosted their annual research showcase ๐ŸŽ‰

There was a great atmosphere in the main entrance as colleagues, patients and visitors came together to explore the incredible research taking place across the hospital.

The event was made even more special as it coincided with the 20th anniversary of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the event such a success!

It's going to be ๐‘ฏ๐‘ถ๐‘ป over the next few days, and while we all love a bit of sunshine, the heat can catch people out quicker than you think. ๐Ÿฅต

Remember to:
๐Ÿ’ง Drink plenty of water (and go easy on the alcohol).
๐Ÿงด SPF 30+, hat, sunglasses and shade โ€” especially between 11:00โ€“15:00.
๐Ÿƒ Save workouts and outdoor jobs for cooler times of day.
๐Ÿก Keep blinds closed in sunny rooms and open windows when it cools down.
โค๏ธ Check in on older neighbours, friends and family.

If you need medical help over the long weekend, using the right service can save you time and ensure you get the best care. Hereโ€™s how to stay well and get support if you need it:

โœ… Visit your local pharmacy โ€“ Many are open all weekend and can help with minor illnesses like coughs, colds, sore throats, UTIs, sinus infections, and skin conditions. Check which pharmacies are open near you via the link in the comments.
โœ… Use NHS 111 โ€“ Available 24/7 online or by phone for urgent advice, and to be directed to the right service, including urgent treatment centres and out-of-hours GPs.
โœ… Only use A&E for life-threatening emergencies.
