Storm "Dave" tipped over one of the tables used for plants & seedlings behind the greenhouse -pots & seed trays rained down the length of the greenhouse. I spent most of Sunday salvaging what I could. -besides that, we escaped any real damage so we should be grateful for small mercies!

For the last few years I have been coppicing a blackthorn (sloe) hedge to make it better for Brown Hairstreak butterflies to colonise. I have now obtained a batch of Brown Hairstreak ova from an enthusiast who breeds them. The ova have been sleeved onto blackthorn branches as shown in the pictures,
Brown Hairstreaks have been spreading into the area (there are colonies near Stratford). I'm hoping that this will give them a head start here at Broadacre.

A lovely peacock butterfly basking in the March sunshine. There have been quite a lot of the vanessid butterflies flying in the improved weather, especially comma butterflies but also some small tortoiseshells. The Bee Orchids are off to a great start this year. They have dwindled somewhat where they originally appeared but have been spreading freely and making nice strong plants on the bank between the new houses and the cricket ground. Bee orchids make leaves over the winter so they are well-grown by now.

I noticed this frogspawn on the grass today. It will be where a heron caught & ate frogs and rejected the spawn the females were carrying. Fortunately there was also spawn in the pond, so another generation is on its way.

I was harvesting Broccoli a few days ago and found this rather nice caterpillar feeding on a leaf. It's the caterpillar of the angle shades moth -the moth is shown in the left hand picture.
When newly emerged the moth is rather attractive, with a hint of green in its colour pattern. It's a common moth.

This video clip from Gemma captures the Robin, singing away in the garden. Robins are one of the few British birds that sing all year round

In November I put the camera on a bank of dried leaves and was rewarded with lots of clips of wood mice scurrying around
