Happy Earth Day 🌍🌱

For hundreds of years, High Corn Mill has been powered by water and today that tradition continues in a modern, sustainable way ⚙️

Inside the mill, a specially commissioned water turbine helps generate renewable energy that feeds into the national grid, enough to power up to 20 homes.

It’s a great example of how old and new can work together. The 15kW crossflow turbine sits at the heart of the mill, helping make the complex carbon neutral while keeping its history alive.

If you’ve not visited before, the Waterwheel House is free to explore and you can even turn a second waterwheel yourself!

A fantastic evening for a really important cause 🌟

Andrew, owner of High Corn Mill, recently hosted a charity night to raise vital funds for Parkinson’s UK.

The first annual Parkinson’s Ball, held on Saturday 28th March, was a huge success, raising an incredible £9,127 on the night.

Well done to everyone involved in making the event such a memorable and meaningful occasion 👏🌟

On this day, we look back to a special moment in the history of High Corn Mill.

In March 1988, King Charles III, then HRH The Prince of Wales visited Skipton, including a stop at High Corn Mill as part of a wider tour of the town.

His visit also took in key locations such as Craven Court, Skipton Castle, and local businesses, where he showed a keen interest in architecture and the restoration of historic buildings.

As of today, that visit took place 38 years ago, marking nearly four decades since the future King walked through the mill and connected with the local community.

High Corn Mill – 700 Years of History 🤩

Dating back to 1310, it once powered Skipton with two corn mills operating under a town monopoly as a manorial Soke Mill.

After the castle estate was broken up in 1954, local businessman George Leatt acquired the mill in the 1960s, restoring it and opening an industrial museum and seed merchants.

Originally known as Water Corne Milne, then Soke Mill, it later became High Corn Mill and around half of the original complex still survives today.
