RSPB Leighton Moss

RSPB Leighton Moss Protecting and restoring habitats, saving species and helping
end the nature and climate emergency. Photography is allowed and encouraged on the reserve.

The purpose of this page is for everyone to enjoy wildlife sightings, photos, news, events and updates from your favourite nature reserve. We hugely encourage you to share sightings, photos, pose questions and have discussions about the site. We all have a love of Leighton Moss, so please assume positive intent in each other. Whether you are new to visiting, have been coming for years, or have nev

er actually been but hope to one day, then all are welcome. Leighton Moss lies within the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is the largest reedbed in north-west England, home to a host of wonderful wildlife such as bitterns, bearded t**s, marsh harriers, otters and red deer. This official page is managed by some of our staff and volunteers. Please note, it will be checked daily during work hours of 9am-5pm but is not staffed throughout that whole period. If you have some specific feedback or a complaint to make please contact us by phone 01524 701601 during office opening hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm) or email [email protected]. You can find lots of information on our website www.rspb.org.uk/leightonmoss as well. We encourage polite, friendly discussion, but personal insults, abusive or threatening language will not be tolerated, so please be respectful of each other and of our staff and volunteers. Any comments that include swearing or are deemed offensive will be removed and if individuals continue to post these types of comment to the page, then we may block them. Whether you have specific kit or just your camera phone, the wildlife and landscape of the reserve provides beautiful photography opportunities throughout the seasons. Please follow these considerations:
- Stick to the designated areas for visitors and adhere to any signage.
- Be mindful of your dwell time at viewpoints and in hides to allow everyone an opportunity to view the wonderful wildlife here.
- When it comes to nature photography, please always remember the welfare of the subject is more important than the photograph, so follow the Nature Photographers' Code of Practice https://bit.ly/NaturePhotoCode. Cover image credit: rspb-images.com

There continue to be some excellent views of Bittern across the reserve.

The best hides to see them tend to be Grizedale, Causeway and Lower, but they can be seen from pretty much anywhere.

There have been some fantastic sightings in the last week.

Bittern continue to be seen regularly, especially from Grizedale and Causeway. Marsh Harriers are very active and there are fledglings on site.

Osprey and Hobby are visiting most days and can be seen hunting and fishing most regularly over causeway.

There are a few Little Gulls on site still, often flying around among the Black Headed Gulls and a couple of Great Crested Grebes on the pools too.

Just a reminder that the Visitor Centre is closed on Friday 12 June.

The path from the bottom of the Causeway to Lower Hide will also be closed on Friday 12 June so the Warden Team can carry out repairs to the footbridge.

The rest of the reserve will be open, the accessible toilet at the rear of the centre will also be open.

We've had a few very wet and windy days recently, but even with the wild weather, Leighton Moss can still be a place for you to slow down and connect with nature.

There have been some incredible views of Hobby hunting invertebrates and small birds over the pools.

These pictures were taken from Lower hide but they can be seen from most hides across the reserve.

We're coming to the end of volunteer week, but we've just enough time to thank a few more of our volunteers.

You may notice how beautiful our garden is looking and how clean the hides are, this is thanks to our Gardening team and Spruce up team. They're work helps give the reserve that extra glow by getting their hands dirty.

We also have a team of Event leaders and helpers, Reserve Guides and photographer. These are the volunteers that you're most likely to see on the reserve that will let you know if anything exciting is around and point out cool wildlife. If you see someone with RSPB uniform out on the reserve, feel free to chat or ask for help with nature spotting.

Slightly less glamorous but still a vital part of the Leighton Moss team is our small admin volunteer team along with our volunteer coordinators. These volunteers will often be hidden away in the office but the support that they offer makes the operations on site so much smoother.

There are so many Volunteers around Leighton Moss and we want to give a huge thank you to all of them. We see how much of a difference your work makes to saving nature and you're all greatly appreciated.

If you would like to join the Leighton Moss team then keep an eye on our volunteer page to see if there is something there for you.

We were visited by this beautiful Osprey Blue 6K2 in the last week. It's 2 years old and from a nest in Cumbria (although not Foulshaw)

Does anyone else find it fascinating how these birds can figure out how to get back to the same area after a massive flight to and from Africa!

Exciting news on the reserve as our first Marsh Harrier nest has just fledged!

They are likely to be in the reedbed visible from Causeway and Lower hides. They won't be very active at the moment mainly perched waiting to a parent to bring them food.

There probably 3 more nests on site with youngsters that are all likely fledge by the start of July, so there will soon be lots more Harriers at Leighton Moss.
