12/06/2026

A new chapter is beginning for one of Sidmouth's most recognisable buildings, with Sidmouth Town Council spearheading the revitalisation of the historic Market Place Building in the heart of the town centre.

Sidmouth Town Council has taken on responsibility for running the building from East Devon District Council marking an exciting opportunity for the community to help shape the future of a much-loved local landmark. The Town Council is already undertaking essential repairs and maintenance to ensure the building is preserved and brought back into active use.

As work progresses, the Council is inviting residents, community groups and local businesses to come forward and share their ideas for how the building could be used in both the short and long term. Councillors are keen to hear suggestions about what role the Market Place Building could play in the future, whether as a community space, exhibition space, venue for local produce & markets, cultural attraction to name a few or a combination of uses that reflect the needs and aspirations of the town. In the meantime, the Council is eager to see the building occupied and contributing to the vibrancy of the town centre throughout the busy summer season. Local traders, artists, pop-up retailers/food vendors and community organisations are being encouraged to express an interest in using the space.

Flexible arrangements are available, with opportunities to use the building as a whole or to share the space with other occupiers, making it accessible to a wide range of businesses and organisations. The Council hopes that by engaging with residents and businesses now, it can develop a long-term vision that secures a sustainable and vibrant future for the building while making the most of its potential in the months ahead.

Anyone wishing to submit ideas for the future of the Market Place Building or enquire about occupying the space this summer is encouraged to contact Sidmouth Town Council by 3rd July 2026 via the QR code below or by email to [email protected]

Written enquiries and ideas can be sent to Sidmouth Town Council, Woolcombe House, Woolcombe Lane, Sidmouth EX10 9BB.

03/06/2026

Sidmouth Town Council earlier this year confirmed that the RAF Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota will be in attendance for the annual Sidmouth Regatta Airshow which this year returns on Friday 28 August and will feature an exciting programme of aerial displays that each year draws thousands of people to Sidmouth’s seafront to enjoy the spectacle.

Among other aircraft joining the Red Arrows and Dakota this year, will be a Fairey Swordfish of the Navy Wings flight. This former Royal Navy aircraft will look very at home over the sea at Sidmouth and is a very special guest being one of only a handful of surviving airworthy Fairey Swordfish in the world. Famously used aboard Royal Navy Carriers in the second world war and particularly remembered for their role in the hunt for the Bismarck and in helping to patrol the North Atlantic Convoy lanes.

Regatta Events will continue on Saturday and Sunday including a live band just before the annual Grand Firework Display on the Saturday evening. The legendary Raft Race which made a welcome return in 2025 is joined by another returning crowd favourite for 2026, the Three Legged event around the town. Other events will be announced shortly.

Organisers are now appealing to local residents and supporters of the Sidmouth Regatta & Airshow to give a little time on Friday 28 August 2026 to help with fundraising collections, which play a vital role in supporting the event and securing it’s future. Sidmouth Town Council organises and helps fund the airshow to ensure it remains a free event for everyone. Donations collected on the day help cover the overall cost of staging the event and support its future in the years ahead. With overheads such as insurance, security and infrastructure continuing to rise, bringing such events to Sidmouth remains challenging so your help is needed to ensure the event can continue.

If you are able to help as part of the collections team, or assist with counting donations later in the evening, please contact Sidmouth Town Council at [email protected] or call on 01395 512424.

No previous experience is needed, and volunteers can offer as much or as little time as they are able to give. Anyone interested in getting involved is encouraged to get in touch for more information.

Volunteers will be needed from 4pm, collecting donations via buckets and contactless payment points at designated locations across the town. As a collector, you will still be able to enjoy the display while playing an important part in supporting the event. Every donation collected makes a real difference, helping to cover the costs of staging the airshow and keeping this much-loved day firmly in the town’s calendar.

Sidmouth Regatta 2026 is shaping up to be a highlight of the year and full details and a programme of events will be publicised closer to the Regatta weekend. Keep an eye out for future details on the participating teams and other Regatta information at www.visitsidmouth.gov.uk, www.sidmouth.gov.uk and Facebook for up to the minute details, timings and other announcements on the event.

Tomorrow marks the return of our Beach Lifeguards for the summer season! 🌊☀️

Our lifeguards will be patrolling the beach throughout the summer half term, the summer school holidays, and weekends in between - helping to keep everyone safe while enjoying the coast.

Over recent weeks, the team has completed intensive surf lifeguard training at the lifeguard unit, Sidmouth Beach and Sidmouth Lifeboat Station. Training included both classroom learning and practical beach exercises covering:

🛟Lifeguard duties and procedures
🛟Beach environment, weather and tides
🛟Rescue techniques
🛟First aid and basic life support, including defibrillator use and treatment of major bleeds

During training, the team responded to a real-life emergency. Lifeguards carried out a primary survey, administered pain relief, and safely extracted the casualty using a stretcher before handing over care to the ambulance service.

Training was delivered by Surf Life Saving Great Britain trainer assessors, alongside Rhys John from Harlyn Surf School, and assessed by highly respected trainer Chris Rae, who has more than 35 years of experience in surf lifesaving training.

This season sees five returning lifeguards - including two entering their sixth year on patrol - alongside five new recruits. Four of the new lifeguards have progressed through the ranks at Sidmouth Surf Lifesaving Club, highlighting the strength of local training and development within the club.

The team also welcomed a volunteer trainer from the surf lifesaving club to complete the qualification course, helping strengthen the partnership between the club, the lifeguard service, and the wider community.

To continue building their skills, lifeguards also attended a three-day maritime casualty care course.

Please remember to stay safe on the beach this summer and speak to the lifeguards if you need any advice or assistance 🧡.
