With this week being Volunteers’ Week, I thought this might be of interest to any voluntary groups you are involved with or know of.

The Shropshire Lieutenancy is holding three briefing sessions to explain The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) and the nomination process. The award recognises and celebrates the incredible contribution made by volunteer groups across the UK.

Groups are encouraged to send a representative along to one of the sessions to find out more about this prestigious award and how to get involved.

Please don’t suffer in silence

As the 2026 football World Cup begins in a few days' time, organisations across Shropshire are coming together to reinforce a simple message: everyone has the right to feel safe at home and in their relationships.

Major sporting events can bring excitement and a sense of community. However, for some people, the home can become more dangerous, as abuse escalates behind closed doors.

Factors that present themselves during sporting events, such as increased substance use, emotional highs and lows, financial pressures, or gambling concerns, can increase the risk of harm for some people.

Domestic abuse is never acceptable and is not caused by football, substance use or stress, but these can be contributing factors. Responsibility always lies with the person choosing to use abusive behaviour.

If you are experiencing abuse, are frightened or unsure about your situation, you are not alone. Find out more here: https://orlo.uk/MH7O4

National Grid Road Closure – Bayston Hill (1st June to 23rd June)

For information, National Grid works associated with the Bayston Hill Substation are currently scheduled to take place between 1st June and 23rd June.

These are necessary infrastructure works and, unfortunately, some disruption is unavoidable while they are carried out. The contractors will also be working weekends where possible and are hoping this will allow the project to be completed ahead of schedule.

The works require a full road closure (see map). Signage has been in place for the past two weeks and diversion routes are clearly signed and demarcated according to National Grid.

I appreciate that this may be inconvenient for some residents. These works are being managed by National Grid and are not something that I am able to influence, but I wanted to make residents aware of the current timetable and arrangements.

If you have any serious concerns, please do get in touch and I will endeavour to obtain an answer for you from the relevant parties

If you're out and about in the beautiful Shropshire countryside this weekend, please don't forget to take your litter home - leave no trace of your visit and follow the Countryside Code.

Remember to bring a bag with you and take your rubbish and food waste home, use public bins or recycle if possible. Litter spoils the beauty of the countryside and can be dangerous to wildlife and livestock. Dropping litter and dumping rubbish are criminal offences.

The Countryside Code is a guide to help everyone responsibly enjoy the countryside. It applies to all parts of the countryside in England and Wales, aiming to help everyone respect, protect and enjoy the outdoors.

The full Countryside Code can be found here:https://orlo.uk/ZOt4A

Young Advisors will take part in a series of workshops to learn how decisions are made, share their ideas, and help design a participation system that works for all young people.
This is a chance for young people to:

No experience is needed — we are looking for a diverse group of young people from across Shropshire.
