Crab and Lobster Potting Surveys 2026

Recently, two Suss*x IFCA Research and Compliance Officers were onboard a local potting vessel from Selsey, collecting data from edible crabs and lobsters.
A big thank you to Toby Roc NN404, for taking us out for the third year of surveys and for supporting this important work.

Suss*x IFCA plans to undertake these surveys each quarter from Shoreham and Selsey, helping to build a clearer picture of crab and lobster stocks across the district.

Officers collected biometric data including carapace length and width, weight, s*x, condition and berried status. They also put the new lobster Minimum Conservation Reference Size gauge to the test, with lobsters now measuring 88 mm following a 1 mm increase.

Through our Shellfish Permit Catch Returns, we have seen a decline in crab and lobster landings across the district since 2018. This data will help us monitor stock health and identify any correlations with local pressures.

This work fits into the IFCAs’ duty to collect more data for Fisheries Management Plans, and the data is also provided to Cefas for their annual stock assessments.
This all feeds into ensuring local fisheries are sustainable, protecting stocks for the future.

I-VMS Update for Under-12m English Fishing Vessels

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has resumed the rollout of Inshore Vessel Monitoring Systems (I-VMS) for under-12m English fishing vessels, offering replacement devices to eligible fishers affected by Succorfish SC2 device.

βœ… Eligible vessel owners can register for a Nemo device until 11:59pm on 12 July 2026. The cost of the device, and its installation, will be covered by MMO for those who register by the deadline.

πŸ“§ Vessel owners impacted by the service disruption are being contacted directly by the MMO with instructions on how to register.

βš“ Reminder: Under licence conditions introduced on 12 May 2025, all English-licensed under-12m vessels must have a functioning, type-approved I-VMS device transmitting positional data while at sea.

Hand Gathering Byelaw Reminder ℹ️

Suss*x IFCA Enforcement Officers have recently been carrying out hand gathering patrols and inspections across the district.

The Suss*x IFCA Hand Gathering Byelaw regulates the collection of shellfish, bait species and seaweeds throughout the Suss*x IFCA district.

Before gathering, please ensure you have checked the following to remain compliant:

βœ… Whether the area is privately owned and, if so, that you have the landowner's permission to gather there.
βœ… Whether the activity is permitted under the byelaw, including daily bag limits, protected species and any restrictions that apply within Suss*x IFCA's six Management Areas.
βœ… Whether a Hand Gathering Permit is required. Daily bag limits may only be exceeded (except for lobster and edible crab limits, which apply to all persons) if you hold a current Hand Gathering Permit issued by Suss*x IFCA.
βœ… Minimum size regulations apply to a number of crustacean and mollusc species. All species must be measured correctly in accordance with the Minimum Size (Fish, Crustacea and Mollusc) Byelaw 2021.

🚫 You must not gather piddock, native oyster or kelp.

🚫 You must not damage seagrass beds.

🚫 You must not use chemicals or electrical devices to gather species.

Please note that additional restrictions apply within six Marine Protected Areas across the Suss*x IFCA District, including Chichester Harbour, Pagham Harbour, Medmerry & Bracklesham Bay, Beachy Head East and West MCZs, Adur Estuary SSSI, and Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay SPA.

These measures help protect vulnerable marine habitats and species while supporting the sustainable management of marine resources and fisheries.

Before gathering, please ensure you are familiar with the relevant guidance and byelaw requirements.

Researchers from the University of Portsmouth are tracking European seabass movements as part of the Solent Seascape Project.

πŸ”Ž How to spot a tagged fish
Tagged seabass carry an external T-bar tag and an internal acoustic transmitter that helps researchers monitor their movements around the Solent.

If you catch one:
βœ… Record the tag number
βœ… Note the date and location caught
βœ… Measure the fish if possible
βœ… Release the fish
βœ… Send the information to: [email protected]

Your report will help improve understanding of seabass behaviour and support marine conservation efforts across the Solent.

Following World Oceans Day, the Association of IFCAs has released its latest film, Conserve, highlighting how IFCAs work to protect sensitive species and habitats within England’s inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) while supporting sustainable fisheries.

The film showcases the IFCA approach to MPA management, combining high-quality scientific evidence, local knowledge, collaborative decision-making and adaptive management to help ensure healthy seas and thriving coastal communities.

Produced by Mindfully Wired, Conserve follows the recently released Lead, Champion and Protect series, continuing to shine a light on the important work carried out by IFCA officers and members across England.

🌊 Today is , a global celebration of our ocean and the vital role it plays in supporting life on Earth.

This year's theme, Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet, highlights the importance of protecting and effectively managing marine habitats and species for future generations.

Marine Protected Areas help conserve biodiversity, support healthy ecosystems and contribute to sustainable fisheries. By protecting important habitats, MPAs can help ensure marine environments remain productive and resilient, supporting both wildlife and the fishing communities that depend on them.

Within the Suss*x IFCA district, a network of protected sites helps safeguard important marine habitats and species, while supporting the sustainable use of our marine resources and sustainable fisheries.

04/06/2026

πŸ“’ The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has announced the resumption of the roll-out of the Inshore Vessel Monitoring System (I-VMS) programme for the English under-12m fishing fleet.

Following an agreement with CLS UK Ltd, type-approved I-VMS devices will be supplied to ensure vessels can transmit positional data to the UK VMS Hub in accordance with licence conditions.

Fishermen affected by the suspension of data transmissions from SC2 devices will receive replacement type-approved devices from CLS UK Ltd at no additional cost.

MMO has advised fishermen not to remove or switch off any existing devices at this time. Further information will be sent directly to affected vessel owners in the coming weeks.

The I-VMS programme supports fisheries management, marine spatial planning, compliance monitoring and sustainable fishing practices ahead of future legislation requiring all under-12m fishing vessels operating in English waters to use I-VMS devices.
