MINDFULNESS 🧠

Mindful driving involves being present and aware of your surroundings, thoughts, and emotions while driving. It can help you drive more relaxed and safely.

What to do before driving:
👉Take a few deep breaths and let go of distractions before starting your car.
👉Observe your body: Notice how your body feels, such as the pressure of your feet on the pedals.
👉Be aware of your thoughts: Notice how you're feeling, such as if you're anxious or frustrated.
👉Focus on the road: Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and avoid distractions like your phone.
👉Engage your senses: Notice the feel of the steering wheel, the vibrations of the engine, and the sounds around you.
👉Practice patience: Try to avoid rushing and embrace the journey.

Mindful driving can help you stay calm and focused, and may make you a better driver.

MINDFULNESS 🧠

Road collisions are rarely 'accidents' – someone has usually made a mistake, deliberate or otherwise. The largest cause of collisions – for all road users – is failure to look properly.

The most common distractions are:
📞texting
👧🏼children in the car
🗣talking on the phone
🚗chatting to a passenger
🎼changing the radio or music system
😡road rage

Remember to take a moment before starting your journey!

👀 Is pushing it worth it??

You might have travelled the same route hundreds of times and think that driving slightly fast isn’t risky. But even going a little too fast for the road conditions can increase your chances of being killed or seriously injured.

Remember, rural roads change quickly. Is pushing it worth it? THINK!

Speeding – the facts
👉When driving, a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death. The faster you drive, the less time you have to stop if something unexpected happens.
👉The speed limit is the absolute maximum and it doesn’t mean it’s safe to drive at this speed in all conditions.
👉Speed contributes to more than half of all fatal collisions on our roads, and on average kills or injures 137 young people a week. This includes collisions where the driver was within the speed limit but driving too fast for the road conditions.
👉The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and 3 penalty points added to your licence. If you’re still within 2 years of passing your driving test, your driving licence will be withdrawn if you build up 6 or more penalty points.

MINDFULNESS 🧠

Before you drive.... take a few moments before you drive to use our simple mindfulness techniques.

❌Stop – take control
🗣Breathe in, breathe out – when you breathe out sigh a little
👉Do it again

Taking a few moments before you set off on the road can make all the difference to your ability to focus on the road environment.

People who practice Mindfulness have been shown to be at lower risk on the roads.

👀 Is pushing it worth it??

Speed contributes to more than half of all fatal collisions in Britain and kills or injures 137 young people every week. Despite this, only 32% of young men consider it to be very risky.

Male drivers aged 17-24 years old are over-represented in speed-related deaths and injuries. THINK! research shows that this audience particularly underestimates the risks of driving just a little too fast for the conditions.

The Mind in Gear campaign was developed to target failed to look collision factor types – illustrating negative and positive driving styles with young people in mind. It encourages the use of basic mindfulness to enable drivers to fully engage with the road environment, enabling better awareness and pro-active planning reactions to situations.

Mindfulness is seen as a vehicle to encourage improvements to human factors involved in collisions, and the campaign was further developed with support from the NHS specialist centre.

It’s vital to always pass horses slowly and with plenty of room.

Equestrians have the same right to be on the road as motorists or any other user group. Understanding, respect and consideration by all road users is required to ensure road safety for everyone.

What should you do if you see a horse on the road?
👀Slow down to a maximum of 10mph
✋Be patient, I won’t sound my horn or rev my engine
➡️Pass the horse wide and slow – at least two metres
⚠️Drive slowly away
