From September 2026, Benedict’s Law
introduces new allergy safety requirements for schools in England, following the death of five-year-old Benedict Blythe, who died from anaphylaxis at school in 2021.
The changes are about making sure schools are better prepared to protect children living with allergies – including having clear allergy policies, ensuring staff receive regular allergy awareness training, and knowing how to recognise and respond to anaphylaxis.
That includes understanding adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs), such as EpiPens, and what to do when a child is having a severe allergic reaction.
For parents of a child with a serious allergy, knowing that the adults responsible for them understand what to look for and what to do can make an enormous difference.
