Today we're revisiting coverage on BBC Tech Now highlighting our Triceps stroke trial. 💪

The national trial, which is in its concluding stages, is testing whether a device which delivers electrical pulses to the brain via an earpiece can help people regain arm and hand strength following a stroke.

Once complete, the £2m trial could make a huge difference to the everyday lives of thousands of stroke survivors who suffer with persistent hand and arm impairment.

🎥 Watch as Amanda James-Hammett, 37, tells the BBC how being involved in the trial helped 'give her freedom back'.

She used the device for up to an hour a day at home as part of her rehab over 12 weeks, combining it with exercises and everyday tasks.

After a couple of weeks, she started to see changes in her hand and was able to return to sewing - a passion she could not initially pursue after her stroke.

"I can put my socks on, I can do my shoes, I can do my house," she told the BBC.

So far, more than 250 people have taken part in the trial, with researchers aiming to recruit 270 participants by the end of July.

The trial is double blinded, meaning researchers do not yet know who is receiving active stimulation and who is receiving placebo.

But early signs are promising, with one person unable to carry a cup of tea with one arm able to walk from room to room holding it stably and another setting their post-stroke personal best in a 5K run noticing their arm function was better when they were running.

Huge congratulations to Professor David Sanders, one of our own gastroenterologists, who has been elected President Elect of the British Society of Gastroenterology. ✨

The BSG is one of the world’s leading gastroenterology organisations.

Professor Sanders will support the new President Dr Harriet Gordon for a period of two years before becoming President himself in June 2028.

Professor Sanders' work has improved the lives of thousands of adult patients living with coeliac disease both nationally and internationally. This includes the development of new approaches to diagnosis, treatment and patient management that have influenced centres in the UK and beyond.

Over the past few decades, he has been instrumental in establishing the city as an international hub for gastroenterology, growing the Academic Unit of gastroenterology at the University of Sheffield into a World Endoscopy Organisation (WEO) Centre of Excellence. The unit is one of only two UK centres to hold the prestigious status.

He also played a pivotal role in STH being designated as an NHS England National Centre for Refractory Coeliac Disease. Refractory coeliac disease is a very rare complication of coeliac disease and increases the risk of certain types of cancer.

Reacting to his election, Professor David Sanders said:

🗨️I look forward to working alongside BSG President Dr Harriet Gordon to support our brilliant gastroenterology workforce and listen directly to every member to ensure they feel valued and engaged.”

As part of we would like everyone to meet one of our amazing therapy dogs, Rupert! 🐾💫

Amy, who is Rupert's owner and also volunteers said:

💬 "Volunteering with Rupert is a win win! He’s a nosy parker on his visits but all with the best intentions. He checks in on both patients, their relatives and staff on every visit, lifting their spirits and making their day! He visits various areas in the hospital and sees both short and long term patients. The smiles he brings to people are priceless!"

We’ve been crowned Employer of the Year at the Sheffield College 2026 Apprenticeship Celebration Awards. 👑

The award recognises our success in providing apprenticeship opportunities to individuals who may not traditionally consider healthcare roles.

This includes young people, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and individuals with disabilities or learning difficulties.

The PROUD apprenticeship programme is delivered in partnership with The Sheffield College. It combines the Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner Standard with a bespoke, values-led learning experience and aligns them to the Trust’s PROUD values (Patient First, Respectful, Ownership, Unity and Deliver).

Unlike traditional NHS work-based training, the scheme allows apprentices to gain real-world healthcare experience and strong employer support so that they can understand the impact of compassionate customer service on patient care whilst continuing their academic learning and developing workplace skills.

Opportunities provided include participation in immersive activities such as behind-the-scenes hospital tours, secret shopper exercises, complaints simulations, career development workshops and personality profiling to build confidence, communication skills and professional capability.

Did you catch our Chair Mahmud Nawaz talking to BBC Radio Sheffield earlier today about sixfabulous new organ donor cards specially designed by the Sheffield artist Pete McKee encouraging more people to sign up to the national register? 🩷

It comes ahead of the which are coming to in early August.

For very different, but equally emotional reasons, organ donation is close to both Mahmud and Pete’s hearts.

McKee underwent a life-saving liver transplant in 2017 after discovering he had a hereditary condition affecting his lungs and liver. Without it, he would have died.

Mahmud’s passion for organ donation comes after his wife died from a sudden and severe brain haemorrhage in 2004 at the age of 32.

However, thanks to the fact that she carried an organ donor card, Mahmud knew at the “worst possible time” what her wishes were. Her organs went on to save the lives of four people, including a little boy who was only one and a half at the time.

Both told the BBC how it is “vitally important” to have conversations about organ donation so that families and loved ones are aware of your wishes.

Pete McKee’s limited edition run of organ donor cards are being handed out for free at a launch at his Leah's Yard studio in the city.

Our surgical teams perform 70+ renal transplants a year at the Northern General Hospital. Over at the Royal Hallamshire, our haematology team carry out close to 150 stem cell transplants a year.

The NHS Blood and Transplant Therapeutic Apheresis Services (TAS) unit, based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, is also the biggest NHS stem cell donation centre in the country.

Thank you for sharing your reflections on the importance of organ donation with the BBC, both! We look forward to celebrating the gift of life at the Games with all the amazing survivors and donors.

Enrolling into the study could make a make a real difference to the lives of babies and families both now and in the future through early detection of rare, but treatable conditions.

There's also a good mix of volunteers from ethnic minorities actively involved in answering any questions people may have about the study. 👏
