Sheffield Alliance for Workers Liberty

Sheffield Alliance for Workers Liberty Sheffield branch of the Alliance for Workers' Liberty, a revolutionary socialist organisation fighting to replace capitalism with real democracy and freedom.

The Alliance for Workers' Liberty is a revolutionary socialist organisation that works for the replacement of capitalism with socialism: the collective, humane and democratic running of society in opposition to war, greed and barbarism. We believe that those who create the wealth in society, but don't have ownership of that wealth and power, is the working class. We make up the majority of the wor

ld's population, yet power is structured to be run in the interests of a ruling class, the bourgeoisie, who are capitalists and their senior managers, landlords and cheerleaders in the media. We believe the working class has both the numbers and creative potential to run the economy and community in all our interests, democratically. We are active in numerous movements including in the the Labour Party and trade unions, as proud socialist feminists and LGBT rights activists, anti-fascists, fighters for disabled peoples' rights and as campaigners for a 'just transition' to avoid catastrophic climate change. Our activists are militant trade union, student and community campaigners in Sheffield and across the country. We are for international working class solidarity, and support progressive and union struggles across the world, in the face of state oppression, capitalist exploitation, religious extremists and imperialism. Workers' Liberty members were central to local grassroots campaigns, here and nationally, to elect Jeremy Corbyn leader of the Labour Party and continue to campaign for a socialist orientation for Labour and for a more democratic, working class-led Party. We work towards a revolutionary change in society but are determined to win reforms that benefit working class people and allow ideas to develop for an alternative to this system.

The S*x Talk: should feminists be “s*x positive”?

What do feminists mean when we say we stand for “s*x-positive, trans-inclusive, class-struggle feminism”?

Our movement has celebrated the freedom to enjoy s*x and express s*xuality - but is this changing? A growing “Fourth Wave” of feminists are more critical of the role of s*xuality in women’s liberation. What do we have to lose, or gain, by advocating for s*xual freedom? Join us for open discussion on the history and politics of s*xuality

Our next meeting is Socialists and the National Question.

🕕6pm, Wednesday 4th February
📍University Arms

For the internationalist, class-struggle left, supporting national liberation struggles is a source of tension. Nations are necessarily cross-class blocs, and victorious national liberation struggles invariably institute capitalist states based on class exploitation. Class-struggle politics require moving beyond, and against, the idea of “national unity” and “national interest”, and the notion that we should fundamentally identify with others who happen to share our national background, rather than workers, of any national or ethnic background, who share our class position.

When will Starmer go?

6pm Wednesday 28th January
University Arms

The financier Amschel Rothschild, spooked by the 1848 revolution, walked the streets of Frankfurt trying to placate people with chunks of cash, and explaining that he had calculated the amount by dividing his fortune by the city’s population.

The gesture did not stop the revolution. Keir Starmer has now discredited himself so much that even if he were to go on the streets offering a wodge of money to every passer-by, that wouldn’t help.

The latest u-turn, on compulsory digital ID, is welcome, and those on the Winter Fuel Allowance, PIP access for disabled people, and the two-child benefit cap were a tribute to labour-movement pressure. The withdrawal of government’s wrecking amendment to its own Hillsborough Bill is welcome, except that it comes with indefinite postponement of the Bill.

But Starmer will go. The question is: who will replace him, when? A new Labour leader, soon? Or Farage, later, flanked by Jenrick and other Tory bigots, later?

The new world disorder
6pm Wednesday 21st January
The University Arms

Trump’s attack on Venezuela, and his wild threats across the globe, signal the end of any pretence of a “liberal” international order and embracing a world of regional spheres of influence, dominated by the US in the Americas and the near Pacific, China in Asia, Saudi Arabia in the Middle East and a “strategic balance” with Russia in Europe. This new world disorder heightens the threat of future wars and crises.

How do we analyse this new situation? What are its dangers? And how do we stop the working class being dragged into the vicious competition of the ruling class?
