Protecting waterfowl and wildlife from catapults 🦢

This week our officers have responded to reports of cygnets being shot at and injured.

We have also seen neighbouring police forces suffer the same tragic events.

As ‘Rural Crime Week’ continues across the country, we are urging everyone to be vigilant and report suspicious activity to us.

Killing and injuring wild birds is illegal and is covered by The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This legislation makes it an offence to kill, injure or take any wild bird or take, damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird.

Anyone found guilty of these offences can be sentenced to six months in prison and face a fine of up to £5000.

Research highlights that those involved in using a catapult and ball bearings to injure animals are more likely to be youths- parents, we urge you to speak to your children if you suspect they are involved in this criminality or own equipment.

Carrying a catapult and ball bearings is not harmless fun, it can be deemed as an offensive weapon if officers suspect they are being used to injured people, animals or damage property.

National Operation Lakeside is aimed at protecting birds and wildlife from cruel sports and more information about the work, getting involved and reporting can be found here- https://orlo.uk/K38yn

In an emergency call 999, all other reports of information can be given online or via live chat.

UPDATE: We know many people are wondering why so many of our officers were in Heeley Retail Park this morning, so we wanted to explain!

Operation Duxford has returned to Sheffield today and the retail park was the site of our morning briefing.

Officers were tasked with warrants and other activity before deploying to numerous addresses across the city. 👊

There has been a big focus on illegal gambling alongside other criminality such as drug supply and motoring offences.

So far we've seized four vehicles, thousands of pounds in cash from unlicensed gambling venues, and arrested four people.

Our activity started overnight and will continue throughout today. Keep an eye on our social media channels for more updates.

BURGLARY ADVICE: If you're going on holiday soon, popping out to the shops, or simply sunning it up in the back garden, please make sure your home is secure.

Lock your doors and windows.

Thieves are looking for easy opportunities. Don't give them the chance to turn your safe space into a target.

More below. 👇

This summer you should be able to go away with your family without worrying about your belongings at home. But unfortunately this isn't always the case.

We know that thieves and burglars will be looking for easy opportunities to target your home - especially if you're away on holiday.

Almost half of all burglaries happen when no one is at home. We are sharing some simple top tips to help become less of a target to burglars while you are off having fun in the sun:

🪟 Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked
🤝 Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property
💡 Consider using a light timer switch to turn lights on at pre-set times

A checklist for securing your home when you leave it can be found on our website: https://orlo.uk/z4Rtw

This morning, Wednesday 1st July, PCSOs Darovskiha and Lowe attended High Storrs School to discuss anti-social behaviour (ASB) with their Year 7s, as part of our ASB Awareness Week.

The morning included the students guessing what they thought ASB was, examples of real life ASB issues, who the students can talk to about ASB and an input from Sheffield City Council around the use of off-road bikes and ebikes. 🚳

Our PCSOs will be out at King Ecgberts school tomorrow to keep spreading the word around ASB.

Increased patrols following spike in 2-in-1 burglaries in the south of Sheffield

Officers have stepped up patrols in the south of Sheffield following an increase in reports of 2-in-1 burglaries in the area.

We know that offenders are often using e-bikes and off-road bikes when they commit these crimes.

A 2-in-1 burglary is where offenders gain access to your home to steal your keys and then vehicle. You can find advice on how to keep your home and vehicles safe from criminals on our website, here:

We're reminding people to:
• Lock your windows and doors when you leave the house, even if it's for a short period.
• Hide all house, shed and garage keys out of sight.
• Use a light timer switch to turn on lights at set times if you are away from home.
• Fitting a steering wheel lock and keeping spare keys in a safe and secure location are good ways to protect your vehicle from criminals.

If you have any information that could help us as we continue to tackle this issue, report to us online or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
