Last week, our Service User Voice Lead, Hayley, visited the Jessop Wing in Sheffield to host the very first bereavement-focused 15 Steps event.

The 15 Steps approach began with a parent’s reflection: that you can often sense the quality of care within the first 15 steps onto a ward. For this event, we adapted the format to honour the unique needs of families facing the heartbreak of pregnancy or baby loss. Together, we walked through the clinical areas and the bereavement suite, holding in mind the experiences of those who have lived through such loss.

We were joined by three incredible volunteers, each of whom has received bereavement care themselves, alongside Sheffield Maternity Voices Partnership, the neonatal parent and family engagement lead and the dedicated clinical teams who support families during the most difficult of times. Their courage and insight helped shape the day, reminding us of the importance of care that is not only clinically excellent but also deeply compassionate.

Over the coming months, we’ll be visiting other hospitals across South Yorkshire. The reflections and findings from these events will guide us in making meaningful, positive changes so that families who face loss in the future are met with care that truly supports them.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this day possible and to Karen at Neonatal Parents and Families in Yorkshire and Humber for putting together this video showing parts of the day!
