Some people set fire to our grass snake egg laying pile. We were not happy, so we built a new one. Our snakes need places to lay their eggs! We also scythed the bracken to stop it taking over the pond area, scythed and pulled balsam, and dug out brambles. We saw: kingfisher, kestrel, buzzard, cinnabar moth, dock bug, 2 types of orchid and lots of bees. It was a good day.

I was in the valley on Sunday doing the photo-monitoring - glorious day and I thought how beautiful it was, we don't need the Chelsea Flower Show when we have this on our doorstep!

We had a great day with the volunteers at Silkstone Ravine today. We repaired a dam, repaired a dead hedge and got all the sticks out of the pond. The ponds are filling up again now - they are such a glorious habitat in the middle of the woods. We then built some mini dead hedges to hold up the soil on the slopes, and we seeded the ground behind the mini walls. Not much grows on these slopes due to the shade and the steepness, so we will see if this works to create some ground flora. Oh and we pulled some himalayan balsam.

The Public Rights of Way ranger was out at Shire Brook Valley today with the ranger and a volunteer. We mended a bridge, a step on a bridleway and the steps that lead to the allotments. See if you can spot where we've been.
