THANK YOU TO OUR SHEERNESS RNLI LIFEGUARDS

As the summer season comes to an end, Sheerness Town Council would like to say a huge thank you to the Sheerness Lifeguards for everything they have done to help keep people safe on Sheerness Beach this summer.

This year is particularly special as the RNLI celebrate an incredible 25 years of service on our beaches.

To mark the occasion and show our appreciation, we were pleased to present the team with a card and a small token of thanks.

Thank you to the whole team for your dedication, commitment and continued service to Sheerness.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED IN SHEERNESS

Could you spare a few hours to help your local community?

Sheerness Town Council is looking for friendly and reliable volunteers who would like to get involved with our community events and activities throughout the year.

You could help us with:

• Remembrance Sunday
• Our Christmas Event and Lantern Parade
• Community litter picks
• Sheerness Town Council events and activities
• Other community projects throughout the year

You don’t need to commit to every event. Even if you can only spare a few hours once or twice a year, your help could make a real difference.

Volunteering is also a great opportunity to:

• Meet new people
• Get involved in your local community
• Gain useful experience for your CV
• Build confidence and learn new skills
• Help make local events even better
• Give something back to Sheerness

We’d love to build a list of local volunteers that we can contact when we have events, activities or projects coming up. There is no obligation to attend. You can simply help whenever you are available.

CAN YOUR GROUP HELP US TACKLE CATAPULT CRIME?

Sheerness Town Council is looking for local organisations with ideas to help tackle the ongoing problem of catapult misuse, wildlife crime and associated anti-social behaviour in Sheerness.

We know enforcement alone will not solve the problem. We also want to support positive intervention, education and diversionary activities that engage with local young people.

We are inviting applications for Community Grant funding of up to £500 for projects that could make a practical difference.

We are particularly interested in projects involving:

• Youth outreach and engagement
• Activities aimed at young people who may be at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour
• Education around catapult misuse and wildlife crime
• Wildlife and environmental projects that engage young people
• Positive evening, weekend or school holiday activities
• Sport, outdoor activities, mentoring or skills programmes
• New ideas that could help address the problem locally

You know your young people and your community. If your organisation has an idea that could help, we want to hear it.

Funding of up to £500 is available through Sheerness Town Council’s Community Grant Scheme.

Projects must benefit Sheerness residents and applicants will need to meet the requirements of the Community Grant Scheme.

KCC COUNCILLOR UPDATE

The latest report from Cllr Maxwell Harrison, one of the Kent County Councillors for Sheppey, is now available.

It includes updates on highways and transport, bus services, education, water infrastructure, upcoming roadworks and other issues affecting Sheppey.

Councillor Maxwell Harrisonn is also hoping to attend our next Full Council Meeting on Monday 21st September at 7pm. Members of the public are very welcome to come along, hear the latest updates and raise any questions or issues during our public forum.

GOOD NEWS FOR THE FLEET

Some much-needed clearing and maintenance work is taking place at The Fleet this Wednesday, 9th September.

The North Kent Marshes Water Level Management Board will be on site with an excavator, cutting back vegetation and clearing areas of the channel where growth could restrict the flow of water.

Keeping The Fleet properly maintained helps:

• Keep water flowing through the channel

• Reduce the risk of blockages

• Improve the area for local residents and people walking alongside The Fleet

• Help us look after this important part of Sheerness

The work will focus on the areas that need clearing to keep the channel functioning properly. Some vegetation may remain where it does not affect water flow.

We know the condition of The Fleet is important to many residents, so it’s great to see this maintenance taking place.

• Anti-social behaviour
• E-scooters and nuisance bikes
• Drug-related concerns
• Crime or suspicious activity
• Problems in your street or neighbourhood
• Any other community safety concerns

You do not need an appointment. Just come in and have a chat.

Even if you do not have a specific problem to report, you are very welcome to come in, meet your local officer and find out more about policing in the area.

Please share so we can reach as many Sheerness residents as possible.

We still have a limited number of spaces available for local charities, voluntary organisations and community groups. Best of all, charity pitches are completely FREE!

It’s a great opportunity to:

• Raise funds for your organisation
• Promote the work you do
• Meet local residents
• Recruit volunteers or new members
• Run a festive game, raffle or activity
• Be part of a busy community Christmas event

We have a full programme of FREE entertainment planned throughout the day, including Santa’s Grotto, live entertainment, street performers, face painting, a lantern parade and our Christmas Market.

Spaces are starting to fill up, so we would love to get more of our fantastic local charities and community groups involved.

There is NO pitch fee for charities.

The Red Door Youth Club has a new venue, new times and some brilliant new activities for 11 to 18 year olds.

We are delighted to announce a new venue, new time, and an exciting new programme for young people aged 11-18!

🔴 Red Door Social | Wednesdays 3:00pm-4:30pm at Rumour Cafe

A welcoming, informal youth club where young people can relax, make friends, play games, enjoy activities, and have fun in a safe and supportive environment. Whether you want to hang out with friends, meet new people, or simply have somewhere to belong, Red Door Social is the place for you. Our Study Smart programme will take place right after from 4:30pm-5:00pm.

🔍 Red Door Explore l Fridays 3:30pm-5:00pm at Rumour Cafe

We're also launching a brand-new youth club focused on discovering new hobbies, learning new skills, and exploring personal interests. Every week will feature a different activity, giving young people the opportunity to try something new and step outside their comfort zone. From sewing and crafts to LEGO engineering, forensic science investigations, photography, music, and much more, there's something for everyone!

💡 Got a hobby or skill you're passionate about? We're looking for enthusiastic young volunteers who would like to help lead activities and share their interests with others. It's a great opportunity to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and inspire fellow young people.

CHRISTMAS MARKET STALLS. LIMITED SPACES REMAINING!

Our Christmas Market is filling up fast, but we still have a limited number of pitches available for traders, makers, food vendors and community groups.

Saturday 5th December
10am to 4pm
Sheerness Town Centre

This isn’t just a Christmas Market. We have a full day of FREE festive entertainment planned to bring families into the town centre, including:

• Santa’s Grotto
• Live music and entertainment
• Street performers
• Face painting
• Lantern parade
• Christmas Market

Pitches are just £10 for a 3m x 3m space, and charity stalls are FREE.

We are particularly keen to hear from sellers offering gifts, crafts, Christmas products, sweet treats, food and drink, handmade items and something a little different.

Spaces are getting booked up, so if you would like to join us, please don’t leave it too late.
