RAF Shawbury hosted an Armed Forces (AF) Covenant signing today by The 3-18 Education Trust.

Prior to the official signing between David O’Toole (CEO of the Trust) and the Station Commander, our guests were invited to experience some of the world-class training which is delivered at RAF Shawbury.

Our visitors included Shropshire Council AF Covenant personnel, and the Headteachers, staff and Service family pupils from local Trust Schools, Thomas Adams and Hodnet Primary.

Wing Commander Paddy Durnin, Station Commander said, “I am delighted that RAF Shawbury was able to host the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant by The 3-18 Education Trust. Education is always one of the first thoughts for Service families as we face frequent moves. We are particularly lucky that both schools represented today have an excellent understanding of the support required by Service parents and children. By signing the Covenant, the CEO is underlining the commitment of the Trust across all of their schools, for which we as a Service community are very grateful.”

Sport happens at every level at RAF Shawbury. The latest round of the Commanding Officer’s Cup was Tag Rugby.

Sections from across the Station fielded their teams to take the opportunity for some fresh air, teambuilding and ‘healthy’ competition.

Congratulations to the Execs Team, who ran out the winners.

Following the tragic helicopter incident in Devon on Wednesday, the thoughts of all at RAF Shawbury and No.1 Flying Training School are with the family, friends and colleagues of those Royal Navy personnel who sadly lost their lives.

A recent arrival at RAF Shawbury, Corporal Holt’s primary role is to train future Air & Space Operations personnel for the Royal Air Force.

James’ career in the Service has also allowed him to develop his sporting talent, including playing RAF Men’s Hockey. In his first year of being Team Captain, he has led RAF Men’s Hockey to double Inter-Services victory, claiming both the 2026 indoor and outdoor titles against the Royal Navy and Army. James also plays hockey for the UK Armed Forces.

We look forward to hearing more of Corporal Holt’s successes, both on and off the hockey pitch, throughout his time at RAF Shawbury and the Defence College of Air & Space Operations.

On Friday we were pleased to support Tony and Trevor Jackson, both RAF veterans on an overnight stop during an electric motorcycle charity ride.

These two intrepid brothers are on their way to John o’ Groats from Lands' End. Tony is riding an electric Maeving RM1S motorcycle and Trevor is in the Farizon SV support vehicle. Each day they charge the van at public charge points and then the van charges the motorcycle batteries using Vehicle 2 Load.

Their stop at RAF Shawbury marked the end of Day 2, with some 325 of the 910 miles covered. The pair are raising money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

On 21 May, RAF Shawbury held its Landowners’ and Horse Rider Awareness Day. The event is held annually to show our appreciation to local landowners who allow No.1 Flying Training School access to their fields and clearings. This provides a wide variety of locations and terrain in which trainee aircrew can develop the essential flying skills they will need as they progress onto flying operational aircraft for the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force.

Local horse riders are also invited to raise awareness of the benefits of riders and horses wearing high visibility clothing, such that our helicopter crews can see them earlier and take appropriate avoidance action wherever possible. RAF Shawbury’s ‘Be Seen, Be Safer’ Horse Rider Campaign is now replicated across UK military helicopter Units and it was great to see the British Horse Society, RAF Safety Centre and Joint Aviation Command represented on the day.

Aspects of the world-class training delivered at RAF Shawbury were demonstrated to the guests with the RAF Falcons providing a fabulous finale.
