Cllr Andy Hollingshead has formally taken office as the Mayor of Shaftesbury. The traditional mayor-making ceremony took place yesterday evening in the Council Chamber, where Cllr Hollingshead received the robe and chains of office.

In preparation for the ceremony, Paul from Dorset Signs hand-painted the name of our new Mayor onto the Mayoral Succession Board.

Thanks to Jamie Randall for photos from the ceremony.

Don't forget – the Thursday Market returns tomorrow.

Every week our Charter Market continues Shaftesbury's market town tradition with a wonderful selection of local food, produce and plants.

Please note that the road closure has been cancelled due to the temporary traffic lights on Bimport. All market stalls face the pavement, so you can still enjoy a safe and relaxed shopping experience away from the road. We ask all vehicle users to drive considerately along the High Street.

Say hello to our market traders πŸ‘‹

Each month, the Shaftesbury Tree Group highlights a different Tree of the Month on the council website, celebrating the beautiful variety of trees that can be found in Shaftesbury.

By featuring a different tree each month, Shaftesbury Tree Group aims to help you discover and appreciate the trees and natural environment around you.

June Tree of the Month - Tilia cordata & Tilia x europaea

Two tall trees growing close together at the west side of St James Park are a small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) and a common lime (Tilia x europaea). They are remnants of a row of trees that once lined the back gardens and now offer much needed shade.

Small-leaved limes are large native trees once much more common in woodlands that they are today, and are an indicator of ancient woodland.

Common or European limes are a hybrid that do well in many conditions and are widely planted in parks and as avenue trees – such as in Trinity churchyard.

They are difficult to tell apart: both can be distinguished by their heart-shapes leaves and small, green-yellow flowers much loved by bees. Their flowers are coming out – their scent is beguiling – well worth a detour.
