On , we’re celebrating the importance of protecting wildlife, starting in our own back gardens. 🌿

Hedgehogs are now listed as “near threatened” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list after a decline in numbers of at least 30% over the past decade, but we want to do our bit to change that. By building safe spaces, we’re giving them a fighting chance.

📢 Join the movement: Build a hedgehog home and share a photo using our hashtag to show your support! Let’s make every garden a sanctuary. 🦔

Since it’s Hedgehog Awareness Week, it’s the perfect time to learn more about these much-loved little visitors and how we can help them stay safe and well. As the weather warms up, hedgehogs are starting to emerge from hibernation – and that includes tiny hoglets who may need a helping hand.

We thought we’d share some simple ways you can support hedgehogs in your garden or local area:

🦔 Keep an eye out: Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so if you see one out in daylight, especially if it’s small or seems unwell, it might need help.

🦔 Check before you strim: Always check under hedges, in long grass, and around compost heaps before cutting or tidying – hedgehogs love to nest there.

🦔 Provide food and water: A shallow dish of water and some meaty cat or dog food (not fish-based) can be a lifeline, especially for nursing mums.

🦔 Avoid slug pellets: These can be harmful to hedgehogs. Try wildlife-friendly alternatives to keep your garden safe for all.

🦔 Make a hedgehog highway: A small gap in your fence (13cm x 13cm) lets hedgehogs roam safely in search of food and mates.

If you come across a hedgehog or hoglet you’re worried about, don’t hesitate to get in touch – we can offer advice or help point you in the right direction.

Let’s look out for our prickly pals this spring.

Sorry for disturbing images however this is what happens when hedgies are supplement fed with peanuts, mealworms and sunflower hearts (commonly found in bird feed).
Please be mindful of spilled / scattered bird food and go the extra mile by sweeping any up at night. If every hedgie ate even a few mouthfuls in each garden, it soon mounts up.

Raise awareness and spread the word! 🦔🦔🦔🦔
