Barlby Community Library A friendly space to visit and enjoy. Library volunteers are drawn from a wide cross section of the community.

In June 2012 Barlby and Osgodby Parish Council took over the management of the library building at Barlby, with the aim of safeguarding library services, providing a part time Parish office and developing a community hub for local events and exhibitions. Day to day library services are provided through volunteers, with support from North Yorkshire County Council who have overall responsibility for

the provision of library stock and equipment. The library was one of the first community libraries in North Yorkshire and continues to thrive with the support of the local council. There are currently 19 library volunteers who undertake a range of duties in connection with the library, particularly the role of library assistant to help customers use library facilities, and other tasks such as helping with children’s activities, hosting exhibitions and meetings, and supporting special events. They are independent of the County Council and the Town Council and have their own constitution and management team. Without our fabulous volunteers, the library cannot run. We are always looking for more people to join us, you can pick up shifts as little as once a month to every week. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call into the library to pick up an application pack. Regular events held at the library include Children’s story time every Friday from 2:15pm and regular children's craft events held on Saturdays and during school holidays. Check out our coffee morning with quiz, currently held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 11am - 12:30pm. We also have a regular Book Club that meets on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 6:30pm. We have a range of DVD's, CDs and Audio Books, Large Print, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Biographies, Travel Books, History and Information, plus an extensive Children's section. There are four computers with Internet access and assistance, if required, to research Family History and homework and Wi-Fi is available! We have facilities for printing in black & white and colour, sizes A4 to A3, a scanner and we are the only library to offer a laminating service!! We are currently upgrading our library space, this is all with the help and support of the Town Council, a CEF grant awarded and fund raising from the Barlby Library Volunteers.

🌍📚 GO ALL IN – Barlby Library Passport Challenge! 📚🌍

This year, Barlby Library is going all in on global discovery! ✈️🌎 We’ve started a new Passport Reading Challenge — and it’s for EVERYONE, of all ages! The idea is simple: read 12 books from 12 different countries and travel around the world without leaving your favourite armchair! 🌍📖

We have two passports to choose from:

🗺️ Our 12-country passport – featuring the countries we have chosen and put on display in the library.

🌎 Your own world tour – a blank passport where you choose the 12 countries you want to visit!

You can visit a country through a book by an author from there, a story set there, or a non-fiction book about the country. Every book you complete earns you a Barlby Library passport stamp! 🛂📚

Once you’ve completed your passport, bring it back to the library and we’ll add your name to our list. At the end of the challenge, one lucky name will be chosen to win! 🎉🏆

📅 Complete your passport by 5th December 2026. So grab your passport, choose your first country and let your reading adventure begin! 🌍📚✈️

👑 Remembering Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Today marks four years since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, on 8 September 2022.

For over 70 years, Her Majesty was a constant presence in British life, witnessing generations grow and a country change around her. Her reign was the longest in British history, and she became a familiar figure to people across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

As a library, we remember this remarkable chapter in our history and the many books, photographs and memories that help us reflect on her extraordinary life and reign.

Four years on, we remember Queen Elizabeth II with respect and affection. 👑

📚 Librarians on Their Travels! 📚

Our lovely team member Sandra has just come back from a trip to Shetland — and, of course, she couldn’t resist visiting a library while she was there! 😊 and what makes it even better? Sandra was reading Wild Fire by Ann Cleeves while on her trip — one of the Shetland mysteries featuring DI Jimmy Perez. 📖🔎

She popped into Shetland Library in Lerwick, so we thought we’d share a little library love from a bit further north! ❤️📚 We love seeing our library family discovering libraries wherever their travels take them.
