Another swan in need of help earlier this week, following a crash landing on a road in West Yorkshire. The animal was walked off the road to safety by local residents, before our volunteer rescuer arrived and took the bird for release onto safe waters.

At 8pm yesterday evening, our rescuer responded to reports of a swan hanging by one leg from a tree near Market Weighton, the likely result of a crash landing.

Thankfully, with the help of ladders brought along by our volunteer, the bird was reached and safely freed from its predicament. There was no way the bird was able to free itself, and without our quick help this would have resulted in a very different ending.

The swan is now safe and recovering in our care. Our thanks to the observant member of the public who spotted the bird in distress and contacted us to assist.

What a difference 24 hours can make! 🦡

This one arrived into our care a few weeks ago, following a report to the East Yorkshire Badger Protection Group about a badger in distress and partially stuck inside a concrete pipe. Thankfully, the animal was safely rescued and quickly contained, before being brought for further assessment.

We found no injuries or fractures, which was a huge relief. However, the badger was dehydrated and underweight, something we suspect may have been linked to the recent hot weather.

Just 24 hours separate these photos - a remarkable difference! With fluids, food, rest and supportive care, seeing the badger gaining weight, strength and, most importantly, beginning to look much healthier.

Thanks to all concerned.

This swan arrived with us from Chapel Haddlesey a couple of days ago after being found on a road, sadly thought to have been struck by a vehicle.

Thankfully, a kind gentleman stopped to help, getting the swan safely out of harm’s way before bringing it to us for further care and treatment.

We recently cared for this poor fox after a freak accident left them trapped in a tight spot, wedged between the fork of a tree in a local graveyard. We suspect the animal was in pursuit of prey when it became stuck.

After being freed, the fox received immediate veterinary treatment, including IV fluids. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before the animal made a full recovery in our care, and was ready for release. We were delighted to return the fox safely back to their territory, giving them a second chance back in the wild where they belong!

Bank Holiday Monday (what’s one of those?!) and today our rescuers have attended to reports of injured animals in Leeds, Keighley, Wakefield, York, Doncaster and most recently to this swan at East Park in Hull.

We were contacted by park rangers following reports from concerned members of the public of a distressed swan entangled around its wings and legs in fishing line. Our thanks to the rangers for use of the park’s boat and their kind assistance.

We attended to this young swan last weekend over the border into Nottinghamshire. The bird was found trailing line, with a tight piece caught beneath the lower beak - known as ‘chinstrap’.

Thankfully, we were able to safely remove the tackle, and the bird was reunited with the rest of the family a short time later.

We attended the disused Elsecar Canal at Brampton earlier this week, following reports of a young swan that had become entangled in fishing line and was unable to free itself.

Using one of our rescue boats, we were able to safely reach the cygnet, remove the fishing line and bring him to safety.

Thankfully, he had suffered no lasting injuries and, after being checked over, was released a short time later and happily reunited with his family.
