FF GLENN BOWMAN
Years of service: 31st March 1989 - 31st March 2026
37 years
At midnight last night, the battery was taken out for the last time and FF Glenn Bowman handed in his alerter after 37 years of service to his community.
The end of an era for Sedbergh fire station.
Glenn has served with passion and commitment for as long as most of us can remember. A well known figure in the community always willing to give his time to community events, recruitment (including signing up a certain deputy chief) and of course dropping everything for a call out - including on his very last day. He gave incredible cover for the station and had the most extensive local knowledge. He will be a big miss.
Being on call is a commitment that is hard to understand unless you've done it. Glenn gave over 120 hours per week, committing to being within 5mins of the station in those hours, leaving family events, meals and gatherings. Every week. For 37 years. It's hard to comprehend.
It's time for Glenn stand on the other side - to travel, bike and spend time with his family without an alerter on his belt.
Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate Glenn's last night on duty at the Hirst Centre at Sedbergh School, and huge thanks to the school for hosting what was a big surprise for Glenn and to Leeds United for arranging for the perfect leaving gift - a signed shirt for one very passionate fan!
We wish you well for the future, Glenn. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to our station and our community.
