Tuesday drill night 26/05/2026
This was a repeat of the drill night on the 11/05/2026 but this time with an officer auditing us. All went well and the officer was happy with our performance. Decontaminates training signed off.
Second part off the night was training/monthly testing on the Compressed Air Foam system, CAF. For this we had help from 2 visitors from Honiton Fire Station, who also needed to be sign off for the first part of the night.
Then branch techniques, which is nice on a night as warm as it was.
We have 3 main techniques:
Short Pulse is aimed into the hot gases above the firefighters head, to cool the gases down, making it safer to proceed inside a building.
Long Pulse is aimed forward and up into the hot gas and flame layer, pushing them back and helping progress.
Both techniques are used a number of times, until the fire is and the conditions are safe.
Painting is the last technique and is used to put the fire out, using as little water as possible. People believe we use a lot of water at fires and sometimes that is the case but if we use a lot of water in an enclosed area, like inside a building, it will turn to steam and make the conditions harder to work in.
Last training input of the night was on the Smoke Curtain. If we enter a building on fire, as soon as we open the door, smoke and hot gases will exit. Not normally causing a problem but if the fire is in a room or an apartment within a building, opening the door could compromise an escape route and cause more smoke and heat damage. By using a smoke curtain, fitted in seconds before opening the door to the fire, it allows us to enter the fire compartment while limiting the smoke exiting.
Good training night.
