Tuesday drill night 26/05/2026

This was a repeat of the drill night on the 11/05/2026 but this time with an officer auditing us. All went well and the officer was happy with our performance. Decontaminates training signed off.

Second part off the night was training/monthly testing on the Compressed Air Foam system, CAF. For this we had help from 2 visitors from Honiton Fire Station, who also needed to be sign off for the first part of the night.

Then branch techniques, which is nice on a night as warm as it was.
We have 3 main techniques:
Short Pulse is aimed into the hot gases above the firefighters head, to cool the gases down, making it safer to proceed inside a building.
Long Pulse is aimed forward and up into the hot gas and flame layer, pushing them back and helping progress.
Both techniques are used a number of times, until the fire is and the conditions are safe.
Painting is the last technique and is used to put the fire out, using as little water as possible. People believe we use a lot of water at fires and sometimes that is the case but if we use a lot of water in an enclosed area, like inside a building, it will turn to steam and make the conditions harder to work in.

Last training input of the night was on the Smoke Curtain. If we enter a building on fire, as soon as we open the door, smoke and hot gases will exit. Not normally causing a problem but if the fire is in a room or an apartment within a building, opening the door could compromise an escape route and cause more smoke and heat damage. By using a smoke curtain, fitted in seconds before opening the door to the fire, it allows us to enter the fire compartment while limiting the smoke exiting.

Good training night.

Monday Drill Night 11/05/2026
So drills this week was all about firefighter safety at fires, mainly the fire contaminates that are present at fires.

We started with an E-learning package as a refresher, then it was time to go outside for the practical part.

A BA team was sent into a kitchen fire to rescue a casualty and extinguish a fire, it's hard to believe we have so many fires in our fire station!!!!
During the BA team's efforts, they were heavy soiled with fire contaminates and needed decontamination.
The decontamination was carried out by one officer reading a step by step guide and the firefighters following the instructions carefully, so to remove as much as possible of the contaminates.
PPE would have been bagged up and the firefighters would have had a shower on return to station if it was a real fire.

The crew did well, with a few learning points addressed.

That was the practise night, as we need to be assessed by a visiting officer in the near future.

Fancy being part of the fun?
If your answer is yes, then visit Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service website and go to recruitment and apply. Also, we would love to see you at one of drill nights.

Tonight’s drills.
Busy night at Seaton!
We started with preparation for our annual fitness test. The crew split into 2 groups, 1 group of 4 went down to the seafront to practice running the 1.5 mile, which needs to completed in 12 minutes 25 seconds. The second crew did the treadmill test. Well done crew, great effort.
Then the quarterly tests were completed on the appliance.
Lastly we completed a e-learning package on explosions.

Seaton, Beer & Axmouth — we need your help. 🚒

Right now, we’re struggling.

We haven’t recruited new firefighters in over 4 years, and our current crew are going above and beyond just to keep the station running — but it’s not sustainable.

Without new recruits, there is no long-term future for Seaton Fire Station.

👉 We especially need people who can provide daytime cover

If you’re 18+ and live or work nearby, you could make a real difference.

Come and see us on a Monday drill night (19:00–21:00), or find out more at

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service official website.

Last nights drills took place at Sidmouth Fire Station.
It was all about getting the wet stuff on the hot stuff, when the wet stuff is not near the hot stuff.
To do this, we set up a water relay using a light portable pump(LPP) and a main pumping appliance. Luckily we don't have to do this too often, so its good for the crew to practice this so they are ready for when it's needed.
We started by making a dam using a ladder, salvage sheet and stepped chocks, and then filled it with water. We then familiarised ourselves with Sidmouth's LLP and got it to work from the dam. When everyone was happy with this part, we moved on to suppling water from the dam through the LLP to Seaton's pumping appliance, before finally back into the dam.
The crew did well balancing the water flow, a successful nights training.
A big thank you to Sidmouth Fire Station for letting us use their station, equipment and wet stuff!
Fancy joining the team! then pop up to Seaton Fire Station next Tuesday night 1900-2000.
Sorry that there were no photos, forgot to take any.

Seaton Fire Station received a donation from Axe Valley Runners for the crews efforts in washing down The Grizzly runners after a 20 mile muddy run. Thank you very much and we have passed on the donation to the Fire Fighters Charity, who do a great job looking after the fire service family.
