A Scarborough man appeared in court this week following a rooftop stand off in Scarborough Town Centre on Monday 8 June 2026.

Police attended Alma Square shortly after 6:15pm following a report of a man “shimmying” across rooftops, climbing onto the chimney and shouting.
It was reported that the man was on the roof following a dispute over the ownership of a dog.

As a negotiator was prepared to attend Scarborough, officers from Scarborough’s Retail Crime Unit engaged with the man from a platform provided by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, who also attended to help to get the man to safety.

Westborough between York Place and Northway was closed to traffic and a cordon was placed. As a precaution, Alma Parade was also closed to traffic.

The man, 47-year-old Graham Coggins of North Marine Road, Scarborough climbed down from the rooftop on his own accord and was arrested by officers at the scene.

At Court Coggins pleaded guilty to causing a public nuisance and was handed a Community Order.

As part of the order, Coggins has been given a 6-month alcohol treatment order and a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 20 days.
He was also fined £80, ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £114.

We hope tonight starts a Long Hot Summer as we say Come On/Let's Go to the Open Air Theatre in A Town Called Malice for the next show on this seasons huge list.
Tonight, we welcome Paul Weller to the stage.

Here's The Good News, my colleagues will be on patrols around the venue tonight, On These City Streets, as usual. This year, as a Brand New Start, we will also have a fixed point between 5pm and 7pm near the beach.
Feel free to drop down and visit the team at the Beat Bus.

If you are thinking of visiting the Mermaids, the tide should be fully out by 9pm, this means that by the end of the show, the tide is coming in. We don’t want to be pulling you Out Of The Sinking please reconsider entering the water if you have been drinking.

Check out what you can take into the venue on their website. If its empty, you can take The Bottle to fill inside. Should you have to carry The Bitterest Pill, make sure you have your prescription with you!

You won't be Going Underground in Scarborough, and you have no chance of being Down The Tube Station At Midnight, as the Railway Station is all up hill from the North Bay. Remember to check your tickets for the return home journey time.

You can find food and drink inside the venue, and within a 10 minute wander.
If you are staying overnight Into Tomorrow, check out the breakfast spots while you are wandering!

As summer is upon us, we have Light Nights, so as you leave the venue, whether you have had Moonshine or not, sing your heart out, especially along Friday Street and up Stanley Road.

At the end of the night, the road is closed outside the venue to allow a safe passage for those leaving. Prepare for delays in the area. Fast Car/Slow Traffic doesn't quite mix. It won't be a One Way Road, but with queues, it will feel like you're Driving Nowhere.

Think thats it... Uh Huh Oh Yeh!
I won't be down tonight, so I hope everyone has a safe night and hope you enjoy the show and feel That's Entertainment!
