HOT NEWS
Close to the Stone in Upper Scalloway 48 skeletons have been discovered. This may suggest a mass murder about the time Malise Sperra was killed, as they date from that time. Archaeological excavations are planned this Summer, on what could prove to be one of Shetland’s most important historic sites.
These may shed light of the brutal events which took place.

The dig is being paid for by crowdfunding.
Of the target of £19,425 Over 60% has already been subscribed mostly by small donations.

First Shetland and then Orkney announced that they are seeking independence from Scotland. The main options are either to become a British Crown Dependency and to enjoy a Constitutional position similar to that of Jersey and Guernsey, or to seek a closer link with Norway.
The latter has historical precedent.
On the murder of Malise Sperra in 1389 Shetland was part of the Kingdom of Norway. Malise himself was descended from a family of Swedish aristocrats, Sweden then being part of the Kingdom of Norway. Vikings from Norway had settled in Shetland in the 8th century.
During the 1400s Norway lost influence in Shetland with the increasing influence of the Sinclair Earls who were Scottish. The Islands were given as a pledge by Christian l of Norway to James lll of Scotland, to secure the dowry of Margaret, the daughter of Christian, on her marriage to James. The dowry was never paid. Shetland was absorbed into Scotland by a Scottish Act of Parliament in 1472.
Will Shetland revert to Norway or become an independent part of Great Britain?
