We own and maintain three historic buildings – Sauchie Tower, Tullibody Old Kirk and the Johnstone Mausoleum in Alva Old Kirkyard. The beautiful St John’s Episcopal Church…

Open on:
Saturday 27th September, 11am-3pm & Sunday 28th September, 9:30am-3:30pm as part of the Doors Open Days! 📅

One of the most beautifully designed Episcopal churches in Scotland, it was built in 1867-69 for Walter Coningsby Erskine, 10th Earl of Mar as a gift to the congregation.

The fine stained glass was donated by the Erskine family; William Bailey of Alloa Pottery and the Younger family, brewers in Alloa.

There are also impressive memorials including a marble effigy of Walter Coningsby Erskine, a World War 1 memorial designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, and a chancel screen and memorial tablet of 1902 in memory of Lieutenant E J Younger, who was killed in the Boer War.

The historic Alloa Tower 🏰

Open on: Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th September, 12pm-4pm as part of the Doors Open Days 2025! 📅

Visit Alloa Tower and you’ll see one of the largest towers of its kind in Scotland, begun in the later 14th century!

Explore a fine collection of Erskine family portraits including paintings by the Alloa-born artist David Allan and information on the 6th Earl of Mar, who around 1700 modernised his ancestral home, created a remarkable designed landscape around it and laid the foundations of the industrial development of Alloa.

Alva Old Kirkyard and Johnstone Mausoleum..

Open on: Saturday 27th September, 2pm-4pm as part of the Doors Open Days 2025 📅

The Erskine family originally owned the Alva estate, but sold it to John Johnstone in 1775.
The mausoleum was designed for him by Robert and James Adam and was built in 1791; it is one of only four Adam mausolea in Scotland.
Johnstone, his wife Caroline and six descendants are buried in the original mausoleum: an eastern extension was added in the 19th century.

The mausoleum was restored and is owned by Clackmannanshire Heritage Trust (CHT).

Here once stood the church of St Serf which was demolished after a fire in 1985, but its ‘footprint’ remains, along with interesting trade gravestones.

The Old Kirkyard was restored as part of the Historic Kirkyards project of the OLP programme.

Steeped in history…standing for around 876 years!

The captivating Tullibody Old Kirk..

Open on: Saturday 27th September, 10am-12pm as part of the Doors Open Days 2025 📅

Tullibody Old Kirk was founded in 1149 and parts of it are probably of that date, though it was restored in 1539.

It was damaged in 1559, repaired and then restored again in 1760 by George Abercromby and turned it into the family’s mausoleum.

It became a chapel of ease in 1833, but it was abandoned as it was deemed unsafe in 1904.
It was unroofed in 1916.

The Old Kirk is owned by CHT with two phases of restoration work have been completed.

Hidden in plain sight, blink when you pass and you might miss it..

The astonishing Sauchie Tower 🏰

Open on: Sunday 28th September, 10am-5pm as part of the Doors Open Days 2025 📅

Sauchie Tower was probably built c1415-20 for Sir James Schaw of Greenock.

The tower complex included an outer wall, cobbled courtyard and large hall with kitchen and a bread oven.

The west courtyard wall was remodelled c1490.
In 1631, Sauchie House was created and built by Alexander Schaw, who was knighted in 1633 by Charles I.

In c1710, the family moved to their new mansion of Schawpark.

The Tower roof fell in c1858 and the gables collapsed c1890.

Sauchie House was demolished in 1930.

Sauchie Tower is owned by CHT. The Friends of Sauchie Tower (FOST) were established to support the restoration of the tower.

We hope to complete the excavation of the site, restore the tower and conserve the ruins of Sauchie House and the surrounding landscape.

Sauchie Tower looking much better after its recent clean up 🪏

We'd like to say a big thank you to the Clackmannanshire Community Payback Team, who on Friday worked their magic on the rather overgrown Sauchie Tower site.

This makes it a lot easier for us to get it ready for the Doors Open Days weekend opening on:

📅 Sunday 28th September.

We really appreciate all their hard work.
