with Discover Scottish Gardens

Stories of the Garden

Our story…

On what was once an open-cast coal mine that left a scar on the landscape of Upper Nithsdale, Crawick Multiverse is now a 55-acre designed landscape, recognised by Historic Environment Scotland as a significantly important modern landscape.

Designed by the late Charles Jencks, as part of a regeneration project utilising materials and boulders found on the site, Crawick Multiverse boasts a striking landscape with distinctive landforms, each one representing astronomical and cosmological features and theories.

Pathways link areas of grassland, mountains, lagoons and a desert. At the heart of the artland sits a functional Sun Amphitheatre where people gather for picnics and live performances.

Over the past 11 years, the site has grown to be a popular visitor attraction and outdoor venue attracting day visitors for nature walks and outdoor adventures, overnight guests in search of peaceful stopovers in their motorhomes and energetic event goers. Dogs love it too!

Set in the stunning Nithsdale Valley and within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere, Crawick Multiverse also has a rich variety of wildlife, wildflowers and trees as well as spectacular views and amazing dark skies.

The site is open to the public 7 days a week from 10am (Mid March to the end of October).

SANQUHAR PUPILS ENJOYED YOUTH BEATZ FRINGE FESTIVAL

Local schools have recently started a new term and we very much look forward to welcoming schools to Crawick Multiverse over the course of the year.

Today we are sharing memories and photos of a great day we had with pupils from Sanquhar Academy Official Site at the end of term in June.

Thanks to funding from Dumfries and Galloway Council we were able to organise and host an Activity Day for over 70 S1/2 pupils from Sanquhar Academy as part of the region-wide YouthBeatz Dumfries Fringe Festival programme in June.

The event was organised in partnership with A' the Airts Community Arts Centre and supported by Biggar Archery Academy, Mike Bolam Photography and Freelance Ranger.

It was a warm day, perfect for outdoor activities, a picnic and ice cream and that’s exactly what we had planned.

There was everything from kite making, archery, and parachute games to pond dipping, a-z trails and cyanotype printing!

It was a great end of term celebration for young people within our local community, so thank you to the Youth Beatz team and everyone who supported this event.
