Port Eliot House and Gardens

Port Eliot House and Gardens Magnificent ancient stately Grade I listed house and gardens. Home of Port Eliot Festival, fabulous weddings and civil partnerships. Film location.

Port Eliot is one of the most beautiful places in Cornwall; the perfect place for a wedding, film shoot or festival-styled celebration. Explore the treasures in the House. Gaze at the masterpieces by Reynolds and Van Dyck. Decipher the Lenkiewicz Round Room riddle mural. Wander amidst the rhododendrons and camellias. Get lost in the maze. Lie beside the unspoilt estuary. Bring your dog and picnic

wherever you like. The House and Gardens are extremely ancient and have been lived in for over 1000 years; the passage of centuries can be felt as you walk around the estate. The House was remodelled by Sir John Soane in the eighteenth century and sits in a romantic landscape laid out by Humphrey Repton which stretches down to a secret estuary on the river Tamar. It is a magical ensemble which in March 2008 was opened to the public for the very first time. The House and gardens have the rare distinction of both being awarded Grade 1 status. Children love to run free in the vast lawns. Others prefer the calm and dappled shade of the spring woodland gardens. Port Eliot is the historic seat of the Earl of St Germans. The family have lived at Port Eliot for hundreds of years, and have accumulated a magnificent collection of exquisite furniture and paintings. But the house is still very much a family home.

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Country House Car Boot this morning! It was fantastic to see so many buyers, and especially lots of hands full on the way back to their cars! The quality of the stalls was great from Cornish slipware pottery to decadent vintage faux fur coats so there was plenty of buying.

It was also lovely to see everyone strolling around the estuary and up to the stables & pub for refreshments and live music. We hope to attract more stalls each month so there’s plenty to look at when you hopefully come again. We already know of a few cracking stalls coming the first Sunday of next month!

There are many characters behind the scenes that help keep the house & gardens operational and our estate handyman Robin, is particularly intriguing tinkering away in the basement house carpenters room or the stable yard workshop.

Any antique object you hand to Robin, he will fix whether it be a grandfather clock, stick back chair or lamp. The house carpenters room he works from contains all sorts of bygones from the houses past, some under the knife and some in reserve to save others. You can see elephant motifs carved in to wooden objects, old cornicing, furniture hardware and a clock with Port Eliot carved in to it with a very old date.

You may see and hear from Robin on the extended house tour and also get a chance to see inside this room which leads on to the ancient monastic barrels entombed in the basement.

Robin also has a pop up shop from time to time up in the stable yard where you can see and buy oddities as well as his firm favourite, Swiss chalet music boxes!
