Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy: St Luke’s Guiding Lights Project 💡🌊

Saltash Town Council is pleased to share that pupils at Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy have completed the decoration of their “Little Light” sculpture, sponsored by the Town Council, as part of the St Luke’s Guiding Lights Project.

This project holds special significance for Saltash Town Council, as the sponsorship is in memory of Grahame O’Donoghue, our much-valued former Casual Caretaker. The lighthouse includes a special dedication to Grahame, with his name thoughtfully incorporated into the design.

You can read more about this project in our latest press release:https://www.saltash.gov.uk/edit/stuploads/9655_843204724.pdf

Darren Woolner, Headteacher at Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy, shared:

“We are absolutely delighted to be part of the St Luke's Guiding Light Project and thank the Town Council for sponsoring our school. This inspiring initiative . . . brings together schools, artists and the wider community.”

The full artwork and dedication will be on display at The Box, Plymouth from 7 July until 13 September 2026 as part of an indoor trail (please see leaflets available in Saltash Guildhall and the Library Hub).

The Town Council is committed to supporting initiatives such as these that promote community health and wellbeing, educational opportunities, and cultural activity.

We are delighted to see the incredible final piece and to hear that the pupils thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this meaningful project. 🌟

🪙🍊 Saltash Penny and Fruit Throwing Event 2026! 🍊🪙

Join us for this year’s much-loved Penny and Fruit Throwing Event, where the Mayor of Saltash, Cllr Brian Stoyel, and the Civic Party will throw hot pennies and fruit from the Guildhall windows.

📆 Friday 12 June
🕑 7:10pm
📍 The Guildhall, Lower Fore Street

This traditional ceremony dates back to the 13th century, when wealthy townspeople threw coins and pieces of fruit from the Guildhall’s first-floor windows to children gathered below. It was a gesture of generosity and celebration within the community.

While its exact origins have been lost over time, the tradition is closely linked to the historic “Mayor Choosing” ceremony and the granting of town charters in the medieval period.

It is a fantastic event for all the family, and we would love to see you there.
