River Bourne Owls Barn Owl Nesting Box activity

28/09/2021

The last sighting of a Barn Owl at the River Bourne Farm site being 18 months ago I had thought they may have deserted the nest box forever. But after downloading 3 months worth of clips today from the trail camera I was very pleased to discover that the pair had returned on 5 occasions during this period, the latest event being just 2 days ago. I hope this is a good sign for the pair to nest here in the future.

After having no activity at the River Bourne Farm nest box all year , we had a visit on 16th September 2020 at 1.30am from the male Owl (I think) that nested there last year. Just a 20 seconds visit, but this is encouraging as i feel they haven't completely abandoned the site. Fingers crossed for the coming year.

Not any spectacular pictures or videos lately, i have posted just a couple.. But the interesting fact is that both owls have returned to the nest box once a week over the last 3 weeks, on one occasion the female entered the nest box. I would hope that they are just checking that it has no new occupants to chase away, and they are planning to return in the new year. Until then I hope they have a warm winter roost.

This is one of the best shots from the previous week.

The Owls seem to revisit the nest box on a random basis. But we are almost sure they are not resident at the moment, perhaps they may return now the weather seems to be getting colder.

This was found in the Owl nest box when we cleaned it out yesterday. It is of course empty as it has a tiny hole in the pointed end. It measures 41mm by 26mm (1 1/2 inches by 1 inch), I have put a £1 coin by the side to get some idea of the size.
Hopefully the Barn Owls were on a practice run this year and will produce some owlets next year.
By the way we have had no sightings for over 6 weeks now, but if they do return there is plenty of fresh bedding to help keep them warm over winter.

This is the same video as was posted on 12th October. The difference being that this clip has not been converted to mp4 format and should have sound. For those that did not know Barn Owls do not hoot, they tend more to screech, this clip contains a typical screech of the Owls having a minor disagreement.

The Owls have returned a couple of times in the last week. These Video clips are from earlier this morning, the quality is not very good because I think they have activated the Farms PIR lighting in the background. But it is great to see them back after nearly a month of no sightings.

Sorry about the lack of Pictures and Videos of the Barn Owls. But there have been no sightings for over 3 weeks. Not sure why?

Only two sightings this week of what seems to be the female, both on the morning of 18th September, the second through the mist at 0500am

Not any spectacular action this week, but I was taken with this Owls strut across the Nest Box Roof
