St Just-in-Penwith Parish Church

St Just-in-Penwith Parish Church This volunteer led page has been set up to raise awareness of and support St Just-in-Penwith Parish Church Our present church is medieval in origin.

This volunteer page has been set up to raise awareness of the ancient splendour of our parish church and to raise funding for its preservation for future generations. Our ancient, grade II listed church is a fine building located at the very heart of the town of St Just-in-Penwith, the most westerly town on the mainland of Britain, about seven miles west of Penzance, Cornwall. Our parish forms par

t of the gloriously wild and ruggedly beautiful area of West Penwith at the most westerly tip of Cornwall. The parish and town have been shaped by its industrial mining past and is part of the UNESCO Cornish Mining World Heritage Site as well as being in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It houses the Selus Stone which is thought to date from the late 5th or early 6th centuries. Our successful โ€˜Raise the Roof!โ€™ appeal blended community fund raising events and grant applications to replace the whole of the Churchโ€™s six sided slate but very, very leaky roof! This was a huge undertaking but was needed to secure, protect, and insulate the building for use by future generations.

What a beautiful, warm sunny day today was. Perfect weather for our second โ€˜Churches Count on Natureโ€™ event when we went out to the Churchyard and the Lower Churchyard and used good old fashioned books and modern day iNaturalist and Merlin Apps to identify the wild plants species and birds there.

Thanks to all who joined us. We will now upload the results and will feed back the findings here. ๐Ÿ”œ

We would like to send our thanks to our Mayor, Cllr Robert Chadder for his generous donation of ยฃ100 from the Mayorโ€™s Allowance towards grass cutting at the Higher Churchyard, Bosavern, St Just.

Sadly there are no dedicated resources at present for grass cutting at St Justโ€™s largest graveyard so the Mayorโ€™s contribution and that of other individuals will help at least in part to get the strimmers going.

If you would like to help by making a donation towards grass cutting please see the link to our Churchyards JustGiving page below.

Many thanks. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

We are seeking donations to support regular grass cutting and maintenance of the churchyards in particular the Higher Churchyard at Bosavern, St Just. Unfortunately, there are no budgets to cover this important and sensitive work.

Dear All,

Great news today as local firm Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding Limited have set up the scaffold around part of the Church Tower so that our other local firm Cornish granite supplies can carry out much needed repointing of a part of the tower facing east. In recent years the Church has suffered from water ingress where the Tower and Nave meet and it is hoped that the repointing immediately above this will help stop water getting in. Fingers crossed as we hope at some point to have a kitchenette at ground level in the Tower.

Letโ€™s hope Cornish Granite Supplies have a spell of dry and quiet weather to get this vital work completed.

My best Andrew
