Reform-Blackbrook

Reform-Blackbrook Your local councillors for Blackbrook Ward. News, updates, community information and local casework from Councillors Eileen Fleming, Nigel Brown and Vic Floyd.

Vic says, “Having retired in July, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren. One of my favourite pastimes is fishing, which I share with my grandson. My son and I are both service veterans, and as my son works with the British Legion, helping other veterans, I wanted to give something back as well. Therefore, having seen the damage the Labour Party has inflicted on this to

wn over the last thirty-plus years and talking with friends and the older community members, I decided it was time to act. I decided it was time for change in St Helens, and the only credible way to achieve this was with the Reform Party, starting with the Blackbrook Ward. December 12th is an important date for this community, so use your vote for Reform and make Blackbrook the first ward in the St Helens area to have a Reform Councillor working and acting on its behalf.”

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day.

On 6 June 1944, thousands of brave servicemen crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, beginning the liberation of Europe from N**i occupation.

Many never returned home. Their courage, sacrifice and determination helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today.

As we remember those who fought, those who fell, and the families who endured so much, we also remember our duty to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.

We owe them a debt that can never truly be repaid.

Lest We Forget.

🌟 A Busy Weekend in Blackbrook!
It’s been a privilege this weekend to be out and about meeting some wonderful residents and trying to make a small difference in our ward.

🚶‍♀️ Barwell Avenue – Pavement Safety

We were contacted by a resident about a trip hazard on Barwell Avenue, and were saddened to hear that her mum had suffered a broken hip after falling there. We went along to meet her, she was absolutely lovely, and it was clear the pavements are in desperate need of attention. We reported it to Cabinet Member for Highways, Cllr Gary Edgerton, who kindly came out to see it for himself and has agreed to escalate the case. We really hope this brings some relief to the residents affected and we’ll keep following it up.
🌿 Fosters Road & Foulds Road – Weeds
After hearing from residents about overgrown weeds on Fosters Road and Foulds Road, we thought the least we could do was roll our sleeves up and sort it ourselves rather than leaving people waiting. It’s a small thing, but hopefully it makes the streets feel a little tidier for everyone who lives there. We even did a spot of litter picking on the way home.
We’re so grateful to every resident who takes the time to contact us, please keep doing so. We can’t promise to fix everything overnight, but we can promise to listen and do our very best for Blackbrook. 🙏
Got something on your mind? Please don’t hesitate to get in touch! 👇

So lovely to see the new "whint Bridge" that opened today, Thank you to everyone involved including "SCARS" St Helens council, and former councillors who approved this project with negotiation with local residents.

The Whint Bridge you can see in this video sits on one of the most historically significant waterways in England, the Sankey Navigation, also known as the St Helens Canal.
When it opened in 1757, it was England’s first true canal of the Industrial Revolution, predating even the famous Bridgewater Canal. It was built for one purpose, to carry coal from the collieries around Haydock and Parr down to the growing industries of Liverpool and the saltfields of Cheshire.
But the story of this valley goes back even further. Carr Mill Dam was originally built in 1720 to serve the iron forges nearby. Iron ingots were carried down the valley to the Stanley Slitting Mill, where they were rolled and cut into strips for nail-making and barrel-making. When the canal came along in the 1750s, the dam was enlarged to supply water to the new navigation, the old industrial valley quite literally feeding the new one.
The canal transformed the region. Small villages like Haydock, St Helens and Newton-le-Willows grew into industrial towns almost overnight. It carried coal, iron, corn and chemicals for over 200 years before finally closing in 1963.
The Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCARS) has been working since 1985 to restore and protect this remarkable waterway. The Whint Bridge is the latest chapter in that long story,

built to reconnect the navigation and keep this piece of local history alive.

So proud of our ward.. Cllr Brown, Cllr Fleming.
