Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change — and it’s a great moment to reflect on how sustainability shows up in our everyday work.
As part of our LGV Driver Class 1 apprenticeship, we actively talk about sustainability in transport and why it matters. From fuel-efficient driving and reducing emissions, to responsible vehicle use and understanding the wider environmental impact of logistics — sustainability is an essential part of developing modern, professional drivers.
The future of transport depends not only on skills and safety, but also on awareness and responsibility. 🌱

That’s why we believe sustainability education should start early — and be embedded into training, not treated as an afterthought.

Last week, we were back supporting young people again, this time in Blackpool!

It’s always great to chat with students about future careers, opportunities, and the different paths available to them after education. We gave a few of them inspiration and confidence for what’s next.

Thanks to everyone involved for having us!

How to Build a Culture of Learning in Your Team
A strong learning culture doesn’t appear by accident — it’s created through daily habits, leadership behaviours and the way we support people to grow.
Here are practical steps every organisation can take to build a team that learns continuously:
🔹 1. Lead by example
When leaders learn openly — asking questions, seeking feedback, taking part in training — the team follows. Learning becomes normal, not optional.
🔹 2. Make development part of everyday work
Short training sessions, job shadowing, peer learning, micro-learning — small, consistent activities have a big impact over time.
🔹 3. Give people ownership
Encourage team members to set their own learning goals. When development feels personal, engagement increases.
🔹 4. Celebrate progress, not perfection
Recognise milestones: completed modules, improved skills, new responsibilities. Progress fuels motivation.
🔹 5. Make learning accessible
Offer different formats — online, in-person, practical, bite-sized — so everyone can learn in a way that works for them.
🔹 6. Connect learning to business goals
Show people how new skills improve performance, productivity and customer outcomes. When learning feels relevant, it sticks.
A learning culture isn’t about having the most training.

It’s about creating an environment where curiosity is encouraged, development is supported, and people feel empowered to grow.

Today we’re saying goodbye to our cosy little office cabin.

It may have been small, but it was part of so many ideas, conversations, challenges and milestones along the way.

Now it’s time for a new chapter.
A new location, new opportunities, and more room to grow.

We’re evolving, improving, and growing for the future, and we’re so grateful to have you with us on this journey.

Did you know that 48.4% of apprenticeship starts in the UK were by individuals aged 25 or over?

The data is clear: professional growth has no age limit.
Apprenticeships provide a valuable opportunity to acquire new skills at any stage of your career.
What’s more, there is no upper age limit for apprenticeships in the UK!

At Ultima Skills, we support employers in effectively upskilling their workforce, maximising available funding, and building stronger, more capable teams.

Really proud to support once again during another Labour Market Information Day.

It was great spending time with young students from across Lancashire, talking about different career paths, sharing experiences, and hopefully helping them feel a little more confident about their future options.

Always a pleasure to be involved in events like this and support the next generation.

Thank you to everyone who made the day happen!

Looking to improve staff retention?
According to employers, 69% see better retention when they hire apprentices.
Apprenticeships don’t just develop skills, they help build committed, long-term teams

Last week, we had the opportunity to take part in the Labour Market Information Day and speak with Year 8 students about careers within the transport and logistics sector.

Events like this are incredibly important. They help young people understand the opportunities available to them, hear directly from employers, and gain real insight into industries they may not have previously considered.

As employers, we believe it’s important to support the next generation by sharing knowledge, experience, and honest conversations about future career paths.

It was great to see so many engaged students asking thoughtful questions and showing genuine interest in the industry.

A big thank you to everyone involved in organising such a valuable initiative.

In today’s fast-moving business landscape, one thing remains constant: organisations grow when their people do.

Learning & Development isn’t just about courses or qualifications, it’s about creating a culture where people feel supported, capable, and confident to take on what’s next.
Here’s why L&D truly matters:

🔹 It increases employee engagement
When people see a future for themselves in the company, they stay motivated. Development signals trust, investment, and opportunity, all key drivers of engagement and retention.

🔹 It boosts innovation
Fresh skills lead to fresh thinking. Teams that learn continuously are more adaptable, creative, and willing to explore new ways of working.

🔹 It fills critical skills gaps
Many industries, especially operations, admin, and logistics are evolving faster than ever. L&D helps teams stay ahead by building the skills that matter now and in the future.

🔹 It increases productivity
Skilled employees don’t just work harder, they work smarter. Stronger planning, better communication, and improved decision-making all translate into smoother operations and better results.

🔹 It improves customer satisfaction
Every interaction is stronger when employees feel confident in their roles. Better skills behind the scenes lead to better service on the front line.

Ultimately, L&D isn’t an expense. It is a long-term investment in people, performance, and organisational resilience.
When we empower individuals to grow, the whole business moves forward.

What Is Off-the-Job Training?

Off-the-job training is a core requirement of every apprenticeship and a key driver of workforce capability. It refers to learning completed during paid working hours, but outside an employee’s normal day-to-day duties.

Its purpose is simple: build new skills that directly improve performance in the role.

What does it include?
🔹 structured training sessions
🔹 shadowing or cross-department learning
🔹 coaching/mentoring
🔹 workshops and projects
🔹 independent study linked to the standard

Why it matters for employers:
✔ fills skills gaps faster
✔ boosts productivity
✔ strengthens employee confidence and retention
✔ develops future leaders
✔ improves overall service delivery

Off-the-job training isn’t time away from work, it’s an investment in a more capable, future-ready workforce.
