One gun. Four cities. One tradition.

Yesterday, the L118 Light Gun sounded across London, Edinburgh and Belfast as the Royal Artillery marked the fourth anniversary of the Accession of His Majesty The King.

In London, The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and the HAC Regiment - Honourable Artillery Company fired Royal Salutes.

At Edinburgh Castle, 47 Regiment Royal Artillery continued a tradition stretching back centuries.

At Cardiff Castle, Reservists from 104 Regiment Royal Artillery fired a 21-gun salute

And at Hillsborough Castle, the salute was fired by Reservists from 206 Ulster Battery Royal Artillery - The Ulster Gunners.

Different units. Different cities. The same gun. The same standard.

The L118 might be built for the battlefield, but days like yesterday show another side of the Royal Artillery, we're carrying forward traditions that have marked moments in our nation’s history for generations.

It’s a role you might not expect when you join the Army Reserve.

You don't have to spend every training day doing the same thing.

Back in July, Reservists from 210 and 216 Batteries swapped the Light Gun for something different.

Working with instructors from BASC, the team got an introduction to shotgun safety, handling and instinctive marksmanship before putting it into practice across the stands.

For some, it was familiar territory.

For others, it was their first time using a shotgun.

That's part of the appeal of Reserve life. Sometimes you get the chance to learn something you wouldn't normally spend your weekend doing.

You’re probably reading this on a device not too different from some of the kit we use.

The difference is what we use it for.

209 Battery, in Manchester, is developing its specialism in small uncrewed aircraft systems, using sUAS alongside TAK, a digital situational awareness tool, to find, identify and tag targets before passing that information into the wider fires network.

Familiar technology. A very different job.

It’s part of how the 103 Regiment is keeping its training current as UAS and counter-UAS become an increasingly important part of modern operations.

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to fly a drone or use TAK. You learn the role, the systems and how they fit into the wider team.

Firing the gun is only part of knowing your trade.

Every month, our Light Guns go through maintenance and a Commander’s Function Test (CFT).

For the gun detachment, that means getting hands-on with the equipment. Checking the gun. Maintaining the recoil system. Topping up grease and oil when needed. Then jacking back the ordnance to check the recoil system is doing its job.

And there’s a simple way to remember exactly what that job is:

H – Holds the gun in the fully run-out position
A – Absorbs the firing forces
R – Returns the gun to the fully run-out position
C – Controls the last part of the gun running back

It’s also carried out if the gun hasn’t been fired for over a month.

You don’t need to arrive knowing any of this. It’s part of the trade you learn as you train with your detachment.

🇬🇧 An enduring bond 🇳🇴

Following the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, we join those across the Armed Forces in reflecting on the close military relationship between our two nations.

King Harald had a longstanding connection with the British Armed Forces, including serving as Colonel-in-Chief of The Green Howards (one of the antecedent units of The Yorkshire Regiment), continuing an association with the Regiment established by his grandfather, King Haakon VII, during the Second World War.

That bond between British and Norwegian forces continues today.

Earlier this year, Gunners from 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery joined Norwegian and US forces on Exercise THUNDERBOLT, a Norwegian-led artillery exercise developing integrated multi-domain fires.

Alongside the familiar L118 Light Gun, Norwegian K9 VIDAR artillery conducted joint fire missions in the Arctic, as part of an increasingly close UK-Norway defence relationship and our shared commitment to NATO's northern flank.

From bonds forged during the Second World War to Gunners working side by side in Norway today, the relationship between our Armed Forces spans generations.

Rest in peace, Your Majesty. 🇳🇴
