Screech Owl Sanctuary & Animal Park

Screech Owl Sanctuary & Animal Park This award-winning Sanctuary, in mid Cornwall, cares for 60 owls from all over the world plus 18 other species of animals.
(1167)

A wonderful family day out for all animal lovers that supports the Sanctuary’s education, conservation, and rehabilitation work. The Screech Owl Sanctuary was founded in 1990 and is situated in mid Cornwall on the edge of the Goss Moor nature reserve near Indian Queens. We hold one of the largest collection of owls in the south west with over 30 different species from all over the world. We deal

with all rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured owls and birds of prey in the county and where possible return the owls to their former locations. We provide education to both adults and children and allow them the opportunity of close encounters with these beautiful and majestic birds. The Sanctuary has been involved in many conservation projects of endangered species and at certain times of the year visitors can see baby owls. On site we have several other animals including Emus, Meerkat, Alpacas, Pygmy Goats, Wallabies and Lemurs

Our owls provided the inspiration for the animated owl film The Legend of the Guardians. Please look at our website for daily activities, special events, admission prices, discount vouchers and opening times throughout the year.

Happy Hatch Day to this crazy pair!
Trelawney and Piper, the chaco owls, are turning 1 today and tomorrow. They are still as curious as ever and probably have the best head bob of any of our birds here at the sanctuary. Join us in celebrating all things Chaco.

Join us in giving a huge welcome to Pongy Paula, our newest member of our offsite and education team. She is only a few months old and full of beans. She will eventually be joining Stinky Pete and Mindy as an additional ferret companion and she looks forward to meeting you all once her training is complete.

It is National Best Friends Day!
What better way to celebrate than with our amazing birds and animals here at the sanctuary. All of our keepers have that special connection to an animal or bird here. This gorgeous bird is Wiggie. It also happens to be Wiggie's birthday today so please join us in wishing her a Happy Birthday in the comments. She is turning 11 years old and she is building some great relationships with our staff on the flying team, since joining us over Christmas. Just like any friendship, our flying birds put a lot of trust in our keepers, but our keepers also have an amazing amount of trust in all of our flying birds. We hope Wiggie continues to flourish as she gets used to her new flying spaces here at the sanctuary.

We have celebrated several hatch days this week. Please join us in wishing a Happy Birthday to:
Kerenza, the little owl, who turned 4 yesterday, and has a new home in the aviary next to our other two little owls.
Sam and Pebble, our pair of little owls, who turned 9 and 8 years old.
Kaya, the boobook owl, who is still smashing her flying displays at the age of 16.
And Gandalf, the great grey owl, who turned 13 on Monday.

Happy White Stork Day!
We are celebrating with our storks here at the sanctuary. We currently have 4 adult birds (last year's chicks) along with 8 new arrivals (this years chicks). Each of these 8 chicks are at different stages, our first arrivals from mid-april are now pretty much fully grown, the other 6 (later hatchlings) have some catching up to do. We work with the and to bring back wild storks to Cornwall and the rest of Britain.

Happy Hatch Day!
Please join us in wishing Rio and Aspin the best birthdays.
Rio Marley, the long-eared owl, is turning 16 years old. Rio has loved this heatwave and can be seen sunbathing on the floor of his aviary.
And Aspin, the snowy owl, will be 5. Aspin has reached sexual maturity and is spending most of his days performing his mating dance to anyone who happens to wander past his aviary.

✨Saturday Species Spotlight✨

Boreal Owl

The Boreal Owl is a small woodland owl native to the dense conifer forests of the Northern Hemisphere. Unlike many larger owl species, Boreal Owls rely heavily on their exceptional hearing to locate small mammals beneath snow cover, even in complete darkness. They are largely nocturnal and highly elusive, which makes sightings uncommon despite their wide distribution across Scandinavia, Canada, Alaska, and parts of northern Europe. During years of high vole populations, Boreal Owls can raise larger broods, directly linking their breeding success to prey availability. We put a camera trap in Chewton's aviary to watch him pounce on his food overnight. Turns out he is a bit OCD about where he keeps his food - the keepers always get it wrong. Wish him Happy Hatch day in the comments as he turns 14 in 2 days!
