Time to reveal the answer to last week's ! 📍🔍

We had to crop this image as not to give it away too easily! But now that we can see it more clearly, this is looking towards St Michaels Church. We think that the photographer would be standing in the car park of Verulamium Museum.

Well done if you guessed it correctly!

🏛️ Curious about a local building, landmark, or even the history of your own house?

Building history can sometimes feel like a puzzle, but Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (HALS) has a fantastic range of resources to help you piece it together.

From local history reference books, images, pamphlet files, trade directories and maps, to electoral registers, rate books, sales particulars, estate maps and so much more — HALS is a brilliant place to start uncovering the story behind your building.

Time to reveal the answer to last week's ! 📍🔍

Taken in 1969, this Civic Restaurant was what was behind BHS, in Market Hall. The BHS shop is visible on the left of the photo. It was accessed via the alleyway that led to the cattle market. They were set up because of the ‘Civic Restaurants Act 1947’. Although the war had ended there were still food shortages and rationing, so these restaurants provided food at a very low price to supplement peoples’ diet.
