Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) confirmed the town’s ‘Town of Culture 2028’ bid was submitted on 27 March 2026, following the launch 25 February 2026 with a community photograph.

Audley End House & Gardens offers its support to Saffron Walden’s bid to become Town of Culture 2028. Audley End has been a deep-rooted part of Saffron Walden’s community since the 12th century, first as the Benedictine priory Walden Abbey and then later as one of the finest Jacobean houses in England. Today, it is a nationally significant historic landmark and visitor attraction, welcoming more than 150,000 visitors each year and hosting important events including Saffron Walden Pride and the Heritage Live concerts. We are proud to be part of Saffron Walden’s vibrant community and value working closely with so many brilliant local partners to celebrate the town’s rich heritage.

SWTC is delighted with the words of support received so far from the community, including; event partners, charities, local organisation, residents and businesses. A spokesperson for SWTC said, “thank you for everyone’s support so far – please continue to back Saffron Walden’s bid in becoming Town of Culture 2028.”

Looking for a beautiful local venue for your special day? ✨

At the Town Council, we offer wedding ceremonies and receptions at the Town Hall and the stunning Bridge End Garden - perfect settings to celebrate with family and friends.

We were delighted to host Annabelle and Tom's wedding last weekend, and they have shared some wonderful photos and these kind words with us:

“Tom and I just wanted to say the biggest thank you to your lovely team at the town hall. They made our day so unbelievably happy and special. Their happy energy and kind words made Tom and I feel so relaxed! The market gave the day such a fun and buzzy feeling, carver barracks were doing drills up the hill and paused to stand and clap us up the hill, it was just like something from a film! We couldn’t have asked for more, even the rain added to the day!”

Volunteer Recruitment Fair for Volunteers’ Week

Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) marked Volunteers’ Week last Wednesday 03 June with a well-attended Volunteer Recruitment Fair in The Town Hall.

A range of local charities and organisations showcased their volunteering opportunities and over 100 local people visited to gather information and browse the opportunities available to them - many registered their interest with volunteer partners on the day.

Uttlesford Community Travel’s General Manager, Mick Bott reported, that they gained two more hospital car drivers and a new passenger to use their service! A SWTC spokesperson said, “we recognise the contribution volunteers make in our community and would like to thank everyone who took part – there really was something for everyone”.

Tessa Deriziotis, UCAN’s Volunteer Partnership Coordinator added, “A wonderfully buzzing atmosphere contributed to this invaluable Volunteer Week event - networking with a wide variety of other local charities and signing up new volunteers."

Saffron Walden Initiative’s Jacqui Portway found the event very helpful, with voluntary partners sharing information and experiences. Currently they are interested in recruiting Volunteers of all ages for the forthcoming ‘Dance in the Square’ on Saturday 29 August.
