This afternoon we attended our third call-out of the day at a local pub following a 999 call reporting a kitchen fire. On arrival, the fire was out due to the prompt and effective actions of the kitchen staff, who immediately isolated the appliance involved.

Crews carried out checks using thermal imaging cameras and small tools to confirm that the fire was fully out and that no hotspots remained.

This incident highlights the importance of knowing the location of electrical isolation points and gas shut off valves—used only when it is safe to do so—and of never leaving cooking unattended.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of an ex‑colleague from Newport Fire Station.

Leading Firefighter Robert Hammond (Bob) was a long‑standing member of the crew before his retirement from the Fire Service. After retiring from Newport, Bob continued to work in his full‑time operations role at Stansted Airport. He was always a hardworking man and well known in Newport.

He will be remembered for his wicked sense of humour and cheeky smile. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and on‑call firefighter colleagues.
R.I.P. Bob.

You may have noticed that our 50‑foot (approx. 16 m) training tower has been removed recently. The original wooden‑clad fire station tower was installed during the 1950s. It has seen hundreds of local firefighters ascend it over the past 70 years, each time honing their working at height and ladder safety skills.

Our tallest ladder, carried on our Rescue Pump, has a working height of 13.5 m. This is one of only three ladders of this size in the Uttlesford and Braintree area.

Sadly, due to signs of metal corrosion, the tower was found to be beyond economical repair, so a local engineering firm was awarded the contract to build and install a new tower. This represents a significant investment in our local firefighters.

Work is now well underway to complete the groundworks and final foundations for the new all‑steel structure. Watch this space for the final installation update.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to our 55-foot training tower. After more than 80 years of loyal service to many of the town’s current and former firefighters, it was time for it to be removed due to safety concerns caused by steelwork beginning to show signs of corrosion.

In the coming weeks, we will receive our new tower, which is currently under construction just over the border in Linton, Cambridgeshire. This marks a significant investment from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to ensure we can continue to train effectively and maintain our readiness to respond to all types of emergencies.

A change of scenery this afternoon for some of our crew, as we’re currently providing strategic fire cover over in Haverhill.

We’ve been on multiple call-outs this week. The most notable include: on Sunday night we were mobilised from standby at Harlow to assist at a large-scale incident in Waltham Abbey, and in the early hours of Thursday we responded with crews from Stansted, Old Harlow, Harlow and Newport to a large vehicle fire on the M11.

Ever wondered what it’s like to train for a real-life emergency?

Yesterday, our crew were joined by our colleagues at Thaxted Fire Station and Stansted Fire Station to take part in a large-scale high-rise training exercise in Cambridge. We were also joined by crews from Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Set in a disused 7-storey block of flats, this wasn’t your average drill. Crews tested vital skills including: charging dry risers, setting up high-rise procedures, and searching for casualties.

These kinds of exercises are a huge part of what we do, preparing for real incidents, working across borders, and constantly developing our skills in realistic scenarios.

If you’re looking for a role that challenges you, builds confidence, and makes a real difference in your community, have you thought about becoming an on-call firefighter?
You don’t need to have all the skills to start with, we provide the training and support to get you there.

Shortly after 8am this morning, both of our fire engines were mobilised to a road traffic collision between Strethall and Elmdon.

Using specialist equipment, we quickly removed the drivers door off one of the vehicles to give our colleagues in the ambulance service some more space to work.

We the crew wish both drivers a speedy recovery. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of wearing seat belts and taking extra care when navigating our country roads.

Shortly after 3pm today we responded to reports of a fire in a three story building at Lime Tree Court, Saffron Walden.

Our two fire engines attended initially, then assistance was quickly requested to help tackle this fire. At the height of this incident we were joined by our colleagues from Newport, Stansted, Wethersfield, Harlow,
Cambridge and Cambridge’s turntable ladder.

We thank the local community for their patience today with local road closures whilst we tackled the fire from King Street and Castle Street.

Thankfully we can report that there were no injuries as a result of this serious fire. Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

This fire call was one of four for us today! Early this morning one of our fire engines was sent to Dunmow to provide strategic fire cover. Then, just after 2pm, we were called to investigate fire alarms at a local care facility. Finally our pagers went once more just before 9pm to attend fire alarms again at a local residency building.
