Another busy day for our crew yesterday, with two incidents requiring our team to wear BA (breathing apparatus). The first incident, attended by both of our appliances, took us to a local nursery school, where a fire in a lift shaft was dealt with. We want to praise the quick-thinking actions of the staff, who led a prompt and safe evacuation of around 40 children—all of whom were safe and clear of the hazard area upon our arrival.

Later on, another incident required one of our fire engines to support Harlow and Chelmsford crews in extinguishing a recycling lorry fire. Please do not dispose of lithium batteries in general waste; UK-wide fire services are experiencing a rise in similar fires, which can cause severe damage and endanger lives.

We also attended a fire alarm activation at a care home in Saffron Walden with no intervention required.

Furthermore, one appliance provided strategic fire cover in the Stansted area for several hours. Stansted Fire Station is currently looking for on-call firefighters. Despite the change in weather, we’re still being kept busy. This week, our most notable calls have included assisting the East of England Ambulance Service and the air ambulance at an incident on the local Common.

Late last night and into the early hours of the morning, we were mobilised to an over-the-border incident in nearby Haverhill where an industrial unit had caught fire. We were accompanied by Halstead, Sible Hedingham, and Halstead’s Water Bowser, along with Suffolk and Cambridgeshire fire resources. On our way back at approximately 03:30, we were mobilised to assist the ambulance and Police at an incident on our local ground; we were supported by the crew from Newport.

As we near the beginning of a new month, think back to whether you’ve tested your smoke alarms this August… if not, there’s still time!

Both of our fire engines were busy yesterday attending incidents in and around Saffron Walden. Our first incident early yesterday morning took us to a carbon monoxide alarm sounding in a domestic property in Great Chesterford; the incident was handed over to Cadent Gas. We then attended a road traffic collision in Littlebury involving two cars—thankfully with no injuries, but significant damage to both vehicles.

Next, we were off to a field fire in Rickling Green started by an out-of-control bonfire, where we supported Newport with additional water and personnel. As we were leaving this incident, both Saffron Walden and Newport appliances were mobilised to a large vehicle fire at the M11 Junction 8 services in Birchanger. We joined crews from Harlow and Leaden Roding, as well as the aerial appliance crew from Colchester. A lorry carrying scrap metal was well alight, taking some time to extinguish.

Finally, to finish off the day, our second appliance was sent to the northeast part of the county to provide strategic standby cover while a large outbuilding fire was brought under control.

Please follow national safety advice and refrain from having bonfires while the ground remains tinder dry.

Meet our newest recruit, Max! 🚒

Max is a Warehouse Manager during the day. He said:

“I’ve always wanted to become a firefighter. When I was at secondary school, I completed a FireBreak course, and that was when I really got a taste of what the role was about. I absolutely loved it and knew then that it was something I wanted to do in the future.

"Even though I went into a different career after school, becoming a firefighter always stayed in the back of my mind. When the opportunity came up, I knew it was time to finally go for it.”

Over the past 24 hours, both of our fire engines have been kept busy with weather-related incidents.

On two occasions, we provided over-the-border support to Cambridgeshire and Suffolk fire services. Yesterday evening, one of our crews joined Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service at the Holme Fen wildfire incident near Peterborough, working alongside other UK fire services to support this major incident.

Today, both of our fire engines provided "make pumps 6" assistance at an incident in Withersfield, near Haverhill in Suffolk, where a garden fire spread to garages and vehicles. Other incidents included reports of a verge fire on the M11, a field fire in Steeple Bumpstead, and reports of smoke in the area near Great Chesterford.

Many recent incidents could have been avoided. Please do not have garden bonfires or BBQs on or near dry grass—the risk is simply too great.

Any smoke seen during this hot and dry spell should always be reported immediately by dialling 999 so we can make an early intervention to prevent fires from spreading out of control.

Today, some of our crew travelled east to assist Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service at the Dunwich Heath wildfire incident.

The fire is now under control, so we were mobilised to assist with turning over and damping down any remaining hotspots, ensuring no flare-ups occurred.

July had us in and out of our doors a total of 99 times 🚒

We’ve attended a wide variety of incidents, including field fires, wildfires, road traffic collisions, reliefs for major incidents, commercial building fires, and assisting the ambulance service and police.

Throughout this busy period the support of local farmers providing water from bowsers and creating fire breaks has been invaluable. Farmers truly show the best of community spirit and all of us fire crews are extremely grateful.

Thanks are also owed to over the border crews who at times provided strategic fire cover in Saffron Walden when we were committed to over incidents.

Here’s some advice to help everyone have a safe summer:

🔥 Avoid using fireworks, lighting bonfires, or having barbecues on dry grass or in the countryside.
🚬 Dispose of ci******es safely.
🚯 Take litter home—particularly glass bottles, which can increase the risk of fire.
☎️ Report fires immediately by calling 999.

A fantastic day of airside aircraft training with the duty watch at Stansted Airport for Saffron Walden and Stansted Fire Station crews. We are incredibly grateful for this development and training opportunity to work alongside the Airport Fire and Rescue Service.

The team at Stansted taught us a great deal regarding the complexity and challenges that aircraft incidents can throw at fire crews.
