Have your say on Council Tax Support

We’re asking residents for views on next year’s Local Council Tax Support / Council Tax Reduction scheme.

For 2027/28, we’re proposing to keep the minimum contribution rate at 0% - meaning eligible working‑age residents who qualify for maximum support would continue to pay no minimum amount towards their Council Tax. Protections for vulnerable residents, disabled people, carers and pensioners would also remain.

The consultation runs until 14 September (5pm).

Uttlesford District Council notes the Government's update on Local Government Reorganisation in Essex. Following updated legal advice, the proposal for a new authority comprising Uttlesford, Epping Forest and Harlow councils will no longer proceed. The Government has also confirmed that local elections in May 2027 will take place on existing council boundaries while the review continues.

Councillor Petrina Lees, Leader of Uttlesford District Council, said: "The Government has announced that Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) has been withdrawn, whilst we welcome the clarity, we wish this decision could have come sooner.

"We did not choose to reorganise. We were directed to do so by Government, and once that decision was made, we worked hard to make the strongest possible case for our residents.

"Our Members and staff worked incredibly hard to achieve the best possible outcome for the communities we serve. We are proud of the work that was undertaken and the commitment shown throughout what has been a challenging and uncertain process.

"Albeit now appearing to be a waste of time and money.

"We have been informed that the Government remains committed to Reorganisation and Devolution, and that this announcement is part of a wider review.

"Our focus now remains on continuing to deliver for our residents and ensuring that local voices remain at the heart of decisions affecting our communities

"Keeping local government local."
