We’ve recently been drilling our Winter Bird Mix in Walden Park 🚜

The mix includes sunflowers, sorghum, white millet, reed millet, Japanese reed millet, Gold of Pleasure, quinoa, plus some of our own wheat and barley.

This diverse planting provides an important food source for farmland birds, especially through autumn and winter – acting as a “living bird table” across the landscape.

It will also support pollinators, with flowering plants benefiting bumblebees, solitary bees, butterflies, and hoverflies 🐝🦋

Fingers crossed for some rain now to help it get going – and hopefully it will look as beautiful as it is beneficial in the months ahead.

Here’s a throwback to this beautiful display of the Northern Lights in 2024 at Brick Kiln Farm.

📸 Photos courtesy of Tom White.

Aurora colors explained:
- Red – Rare! Forms above 150 miles when solar particles hit oxygen during a strong geomagnetic storm.
- Green – Most common. Appears 60–120 miles up, caused by collisions with oxygen.
- Purple – Forms 60–100 miles high when solar energy meets nitrogen, often during active nights.

What a sight - nature’s own light show at Audley End Estate ✨

🌳 Our Oak’s Amazing Journey

One of our estate oaks has found a new purpose! After falling in a storm, it perfectly matched a call from the for oak trees of a specific size for the rebuild project — and they were thrilled to take it. 🛶

Originally scheduled for completion this summer, the project has been delayed, but we’re excited to have contributed to bringing history back to life. We’ll share updates as the ship progresses!

In September 2025, we partnered with to enhance the ecological value of a stretch of the River Cam running through the estate.

Chalk streams are globally rare — most are found in southern England — yet many face increasing pressure from human activity. Historic modifications and reduced flows have left stretches uniform and ecologically depleted.

Healthy rivers thrive on diversity. Variations in depth and flow — from fast, oxygen-rich runs to slower, sheltered backwaters — create the habitats needed to support a wide range of wildlife 🐟🦆

This project focused on restoring that natural complexity. Narrowing some sections increased flow rates, while quieter backwaters now provide essential habitat, including spawning grounds for fish.

A key element was the reintroduction of gravel to the riverbed. Removed in the 1940s during wartime defensive works, these gravels help restore natural river processes and improve habitat quality.

This work is part of our broader commitment to long-term stewardship — restoring natural systems while respecting the layered history of the landscape.

👋 Meet the Team: Ollie Hauxwell – Estate Director at Audley End Estate

Ollie joined Audley End Estate in August 2025 as Estate Director. Since then, he’s been enjoying getting to know both the landscape and the many people who value and spend time here.

Growing up in Hertfordshire, Ollie spent weekends and school holidays helping local farmers, sparking a lifelong love of the countryside. He has worked across estates in Oxfordshire and Suffolk and spent the past five and a half years at Hatfield Park managing the rural side of the estate.

What drew him to Audley End Estate was the opportunity to make a meaningful impact — for the estate, the environment, and the community. Ollie believes estates work best when they are open, engaged, and part of something bigger. He’s keen to continue listening, collaborating, and playing a positive role across the estate.

Ollie’s approach is rooted in the belief that estates have a unique role in the modern countryside — not simply as landowners, but as active and thoughtful stewards. That means drawing on the estate’s heritage, environmental ambition, and entrepreneurial spirit to care for the land while ensuring it remains a thriving, working place for the future.

💬 “I’ve already met many wonderful people and look forward to meeting more of you over the coming months. . If you spot me out and about with my dog Wilma, please say hi!”

We’re proud of the people who keep Audley End Estate thriving — from farmland to woodlands, and every corner in between.

Swan Lodge on Audley End Estate (Grade II Listed)

Our diverse estate portfolio includes historic cottages, charming lodges, and contemporary homes. Swan Lodge, a Grade II listed property, embodies the estate’s heritage with its picturesque Tudor revival architecture, flint and brick walls, clay-tiled roof, and elegant casement windows—blending historic charm with practical rural living.

Located on New Pond Lane, Saffron Walden, Swan Lodge was originally built as a park lodge, marking the estate’s boundary and entrance routes. Its design showcases a scenic interpretation of Tudor revival architecture, popular in the early 1800s, combining traditional materials with decorative detail.

Architectural highlights include:
⭐️ Flint cobble walls with red brick dressings, giving a textured, historic character.
⭐️ Clay-tiled roof and L‑shaped plan with two parallel blocks of differing lengths, creating a dynamic silhouette.
⭐️ Symmetrical gables with parapets, kneelers, and decorative finials, referencing Tudor styling.
⭐️ Distinctive cast-iron diamond-lattice casement windows set in chamfered brick surrounds.
⭐️ Central gabled porch with angled buttresses and an internal door with a four-centred arched overlight—echoing medieval revival influences.
⭐️ Large, elaborately configured brick chimney stacks with diagonal shafts, punctuating the roofline and reinforcing its decorative silhouette.

These elements combine to give Swan Lodge a quintessential rural English aesthetic, rooted in historic styles yet executed with the craftsmanship of the early 19th century. Its Grade II listing underscores its value not only as estate property but as a key part of the architectural and cultural heritage of Audley End Estate.
