If you have been walking on a footpath through the Estate recently, you may have spotted a large dark mound in one of our fields, or on another local farm, and wondered what it is. These are biosolids, a treated, nutrient-rich soil improver that is stored before being spread on farmland.

Biosolids are produced as part of the wastewater treatment process. The organic material is treated and processed before it can be used on farmland and is tested and monitored to strict standards, including checks for substances such as heavy metals.

When applied to the soil, biosolids provide nutrients and organic matter that can benefit crops and plants, including nitrogen and phosphorus. They can also help improve soil structure and reduce the need for other fertilisers.

You may also notice a smell when biosolids are first spread. While this can be unpleasant, it is generally short-lived and fades as the material settles into the soil.

Using treated biosolids is one way of recycling nutrients from the wastewater treatment process back into agriculture, rather than sending this material to waste.

Earlier this year, we shared one of our beautiful historic homes, Keeper’s Lodge on Chestnut Avenue.

As a listed property, it features unique wooden windows, and our Estate Maintenance team has been busy crafting bespoke replacement casements to preserve their character.

Here’s Craig glazing one of the windows in the workshop, ready for its final coat of paint.

Meet the Team: Craig: Estate Maintenance Team at Audley End Estate

Role: Craig is a valued member of our Estate Maintenance Team. Having lived locally for 13 years and worked on the Estate for the past 11, he plays an important role in keeping the Estate running smoothly. His work takes him across the Estate, from decorating and woodwork repairs to general maintenance.

Craig is also an essential part of the Audley End Christmas Barn team, helping to make display shelves, set up the Barn, welcome customers and help them find their perfect Christmas tree.

Passion: Craig particularly enjoys the problem-solving side of his role and finding practical ways to tackle new challenges. His ideal project would be creating something bespoke from wood - perhaps even a summer house!

Fun facts: Craig previously worked at the Queen’s Head in Littlebury and has recently taken up metal detecting.

Family: Craig lives on the Estate with his partner Emma and their son.

An early start, a busy few weeks and a harvest wrapped up by the end of July.

With the hot, dry spring and summer pushing crops on by around three weeks, the combine was into fields much earlier than usual. The dry conditions meant we could keep moving, and the team worked hard to make the most of every good day.

By the end of July, the last of it was in, when in a more typical year, we'd still have plenty left to cut into August.

Our CLAAS combine certainly proved its worth, helping the team work efficiently through a fast-moving harvest and performing reliably throughout a demanding few weeks. Investing carefully in the equipment and technology needed to support modern farming plays an important role in helping us farm productively, responsibly and for the long term.

A friendly reminder to everyone enjoying Walden Park: please do not light fires or use barbecues.

Walden Park is home to some truly remarkable trees, including ancient specimens that have stood for hundreds of years and form an irreplaceable part of this historic landscape between Saffron Walden and Audley End House.

We are delighted that so many people enjoy walking through the Park, but the current drought conditions mean that even a small fire can have devastating consequences. The loss of a single ancient tree would be irreversible, and there is also a very real risk of fire spreading beyond the Park into neighbouring countryside and the wider Saffron Walden area.

As dry conditions continue across the country, preventing wildfires has become everyone's responsibility. By not lighting fires or barbecues, you are helping to protect this special landscape, its wildlife, its ancient trees, and the local community.

Thank you for helping us care for Walden Park so that everyone can continue to enjoy it safely. If you see anything that causes concern, please contact the police.

If you’ve spotted the Red Tractor logo on products like flour, bread, or breakfast cereals, it’s a sign of something important.

Here on the estate, our arable crops are grown to Red Tractor standards, which means:

– Full traceability – from the seed we plant right through to harvest
– Safe and responsible farming – with strict rules on crop protection and storage. We have invested in a fantastic new grain store to help us continue to meet the high standards required.
– Care for the environment – protecting soil health, wildlife, and water quality
– Regular independent inspections to make sure we’re meeting these high standards

From wheat in your loaf to barley in your breakfast, the Red Tractor logo helps you know your food has been grown to trusted British standards.

For us, it’s about farming with care — producing quality crops while looking after the land for future generations.

A closer look at some of the wildlife found across Audley End Estate. 🦋

The Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) can be recognised by its striking orange and black wings, with distinctive white spots along the wingtips. The underside is more subtle, with soft brown and grey tones and delicate eye spots. Often seen across the Saffron Walden area in summer, here it is resting on an oxeye daisy – one of the UK’s most familiar wildflowers.

Also pictured is a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), likely a male, identified by its short antlers. Typically found within woodland, roe deer will often venture out into fields to forage. Their coats change with the seasons, appearing a rich reddish-brown in summer and turning to a more subdued grey-brown in winter.

We are fortunate to have a small population of roe deer on the Estate, alongside a larger number of fallow deer.

Meet the Woodmen 🪵

Paul Young and Adrian Law are our full-time Woodmen, caring for the trees across the Estate. Both began their careers here after leaving school in 1980, and together they bring over 90 years of experience to Audley End Estate.

Adrian joined first, making him our longest-serving employee, while Paul represents the sixth generation of the Young family to work on the Estate. So incredibly special!

Their expertise, dedication and long-standing commitment are deeply valued, and they exemplify the people who make Audley End Estate such a special place to work.

👋 Meet the Team: Andrew Appleby: Farm Team Member at Audley End Estate

Role: Andrew (Andy) is a valued member of our farm team. Having lived and worked on the estate his entire life, he brings a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience that greatly benefits our operations. Andy plays a key role in primary and secondary cultivations, supports crop protection through bowser work, and is involved in fertiliser spreading. During harvest, he operates the tractor, carting grain from the combine in the field back to the grain store.

Passion: Andy enjoys all four seasons of the farming year and is always keen to learn about new technologies that support the future of farming.

Fun fact: Andrew recently had the proud honour of being Father of the Bride at his daughter Laura's wedding.

Hobbies: Gardening and country sports.
