The former Littlehampton Hospital site has sat empty since the hospital closed in 2003. When NHS Property Services began marketing the 0.68-acre site for sale earlier this year, together, we made our views clear. There was a strong response to my survey, and many of you wrote in and got in touch to say the same thing: any money from this land should go straight back into local healthcare.

That strength of local feeling made a real difference. After weeks of pressure, meetings and formal correspondence with NHS Property Services and NHS Surrey and Sussex ICB, they have now given a written commitment that 100% of the proceeds from the sale will be reinvested in local healthcare, with funding earmarked for improvements to Littlehampton Health Centre as part of the new Neighbourhood Health Strategy.

Although we could not stop the sale itself, pressure from our community secured a real result: this money will stay in Littlehampton, not disappear into a wider NHS budget.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey, wrote in, or shared their views. I will keep pressing NHS leaders for a clear, published plan and timetable, and I'll update residents as things progress.

REPLACEMENT OF THE VILLAGE WAR MEMORIAL
Works to take place 8-11 September 2026
The Village’s most familiar Memorial has stood and been at the heart of many Commemoration Services over the past 74 years where it has been subjected to all weathers and environmental conditions serving our community well. It was officially unveiled on July 2nd, 1952, having been designed by architect Brian Tyler who had recently overseen the design of the then newly built Methodist Church.

Made from Portland Stone, and weighing just over 3 tonnes, the Parish Council took ownership of the Memorial in August 1954.

In July 2025, The Parish Council commissioned The War Memorial Conservation Company to undertake a Condition Report of the Village War Memorial. Sadly, the report confirmed that the original Portland Stone structure had begun to deteriorate significantly year on year, and that the previously applied conservation shelter coats had started to flake away.

The Council explored various options that may have slowed the deterioration of the Memorial, but following further specialist advice it was concluded that, despite further conservation works, the aesthetics of the Memorial would most likely be compromised as it continued to undoubtedly deteriorate.

After much detailed consideration the Parish Council decided upon the long-term solution of replacing the Memorial with a matching replica made of Portland Stone.

The existing Memorial will be subject to respectful dismantling, transporting and environmentally responsible disposal.

The carving, engraving and installing of the new replacement Memorial will match and reflect exactly the original Memorial design which had been carefully agreed by the Rustington Community nearly 75 years ago. The photographs show the new replacement Memorial during its creation.

Today is Merchant Navy Day, a day to honour and remember the sacrifices of the, often forgotten and invisible, but very hard-working, Merchant Navy seafarers.

Merchant seafarers have long played a crucial role in keeping the UK supplied. Their courage and dedication have kept vital supply routes operating through global conflicts, including both world wars, and during more recent emergencies such as the Covid-19 pandemic, Strait of Hormuz crisis, and the war in Ukraine.

Their role remains just as important today. Around 90% of the UK’s traded goods are transported by sea, making merchant seafarers a fundamental part of the nation’s economy and everyday life.

Merchant Navy Day provides an opportunity to pause, remember their contribution and show our appreciation for the seafarers and families who support them.

It was a very busy summer for the association, ( HistoryFest, Yapton Local History Fair, being filmed for a short film by South-downs Film Makers and the Scarecrow Trail ), but things are beginning to calm down a bit. Until next week, that is, when we have our next talk!
